update on this; we're having a bbq in morpeth somewhere along the river. we have a local up there who's gonna suss out a good spot for us :D so bring some snags in a small esky if you want :)

I must be going crazy with my itinerary. It's currently 13 pages... (but it's seriously a "Dummies guide")

May i suggest this as an alternate route back:
Alternate via twisty roads

IIRC (from Feb 08) there is a short patch which is gravel - no speed required, so easily negotiated.

I am totally unfamiliar with the Old Pacific Hwy, so I have only selected what looks to be the twistiest bits which link up with the other road. Anyone with better knowledge - I'm more than happy for corrections.

Otherwise it looks like a bit over 3hrs for return back to Hornsby.
Bear in mind I've only driven this road once, and that was some 8 months ago, so I might not necessarily remember all the turns/direction changes. Will have GPS as backup if required (assuming it works there...)

lol the directions up to morpeth are actually really simple... less than 10 turns all up i think. nothing like you're big cruise down south, those southern roads are a real pain to navigate through (especially sans gps like me lol )

Not sure about this one as it appears to be turning into some monumental drive. I was hoping for a nice couple of hours with some related chat. not a whole day affair

You could take the Freeway back which makes it a lot shorter - but maybe that's not the kind of "nice couple of hours" you had in mind?

if you dont want to drive so far, maybe come along and see how you feel at the halfway house (bout half way up putty road). we'll stop there for a quick break. you'll still have a nice drive and have the chance to chat to all of us and you'll be home in time for lunch.

or the other alternative is to come up the putty, have a quick lunch up there and take the freeway home in time for afternoon tea
