Oil for GTI!!!

I will change my oils this week and am between them
  • aral supertronic longlife III 5W-30
  • mobil1 5w-30
also I think motul 5W-30 and castrol 5W-30

who it is your opinion?

LivEToDrivE 05-07-2006 09:46 AM

I've always used Mobil 1 synthetic 5w-30 on my prelude and seemed to do very nicely especially because it had semi-high mileage, so thats the only one I can reply to. Enjoy

Being in Greece, I don't know if you can get it, but i run Redline products in all my cars. Greatoil, and I have had zero problems with it.

DubtecV2 05-07-2006 10:40 AM

US versions of the GTI must run Mobile 1 0w-40 (or similar). That's what the dealership uses and what I recommend.

True ... MOBIL 1 has alway's been top shelf in my oppinion.

Rabbit GTI 05-07-2006 11:19 AM

mobil 1 is the gold standard...i would never use anything else in a highly complex engine like the new FSI's...when i get mine of course

DBCPerformance 05-07-2006 01:02 PM

another Mobil1:thumbsup:

kpilidis 05-07-2006 03:17 PM

here in Greece VW it proposes 5-30

so i put mobil 1!!!

ünpimptheauto 05-07-2006 08:03 PM

My local independent VW/Audi shop has gone away from all Mobil 1 products in the turbocharged VW/Audi applications.

They tell me that they have seen Mobil 1 start breaking down with the high heat of the modified turbo cars. I'm not sure if it's for all turbo VW/Audis they maintain, but most of their customers are pushing some serious HP (like 500hp B5 S4s).

Thus, they have started using Castrol products now. My first oil change will be with Castrol or Royal Purple.

Wantagti 05-09-2006 05:17 PM

Our VW dealer told me Castrol syntec is the oil VW recommends. I don't own one (yet) so I could say myself.

McPsycho 05-09-2006 09:30 PM

i put in 5w-30 and i live in the mofugging states. is that bad?

Kirium 05-09-2006 09:40 PM

I've always heard good things about Royal Purple... Don't know if it's just the aura around such an expensive oil tho...

I use Fuchs in my current MkIV GTI, and plan on using it in my MkV GTI too...

Dubtec is right, if you go with Mobil 1, you need to get the VW recommended 0W-40. It's not available everywhere but I've seen 6 quart versions at Walmart.

McPsycho 05-10-2006 03:19 AM

im pretty sure the maual says to use 5w-30 which is why i put that in. im gonna check in the morning to see what it says again.

06gtimkv 05-10-2006 08:13 AM

greddy came out with three different types of oil that are made specially for turbo charged engines you might want to check that out
www.greddy.com just scroll down to the bottom of the home page and they make three types gr-1 gr-2 gr-3 1 and 2 are for turbo engines and 3 is for n\a engines

DubtecV2 05-10-2006 11:22 AM

The manual might say 5w-30, but that doesn't matter. What actually matters is that you get an oil that meets the VW 502.00 spec which is what the mkV GTI requires. Mobile 1 5w-30 does not meet this spec, Mobile 1 0w-40 does. So you put the wrong oil in. Change it when you get a chance, or leave it in and take a chance. It's up to you.

trick000 05-18-2006 09:11 AM

I'm gonna use Mobil 1 0w40. $5.65/quart at walmart.

You didn't seriously just post that did you? Jeeze....seriously man, read and think before you look like an idiot. The oil, no matter what, has to meet V@'s requirements, not just a random viscosity. So yeah if it's not the factory VW fill, 5w-30 isn't a rule of thumb, it's a guideline for thickness, for an oil that NEEDS to meets VW's seal of approval.
