For those considering hte OEM R32 rear bumper on a US GTI, what to do with the rear license place?

A US license place is taller than the euro ones. So, it doesn't seem to really "fit".

See how the plate hangs below the opening alloted for the plate? What do to? Use spacers to keep the plate off the bumper area evenly?

The R32 is coming out in the states so they'll have a proper rear bumper available then. I swear I've seen one's that work with US spec plates, just can't remember where.

Problem is, I want to fit that R32 on my GTI now! I'm ready to make the rear section of the exhaust to fit immediately!

Yeah I feel ya, however it's gonna be hard to locate the piece you need now, it's hard to get any body parts for mk5's period, but I've seen it somewhere for sale. I'll look around and try to find it again.

It's a work in progress. I going to continue tweaking it until I'm happy.

He probably does not know how much that cost, because that is not his car.

The bumper is not that much, like $600, then the paint, and any custom work needed, and then a little exhaust customizing..

As for the original question, you can put little 3m round felt spacers on the back of the plate to help keep it off of the bumper.

Or, just run it like this

i dont think its just a little exhaust customizing, i think there is a considerable amount of work if you want the actual r32 exhaust on it

Exhaust tips cost me $55 for the pair (4" OD, Magnaflow).

I've got the stainless tubing parts to build the rear exhaust porition, custom. Figure around $100 for the welding.

I just need the bumper and painting.

I can't run a euro plate...since it's technically the "wife's car". She'll be very upset if she gets pulled over by Johnny Law, giving her grief over illegal plates, no front plate, etc.

So, I gotta keep the car ligit.

Have you ordered the bumper yet? From what I have heard they are taking about 6-8 weeks to get them. This is also becoming a very popular mod, since Brian did his car with the custom work (the pics above) and the bumper is now becoming a little harder to get.

If you order from tmtuning (www.tmtuning.com) It costs about 700 shipped and you'll get it in a few days; from oempl.us (www.oempl.us) you'll get it for about 600+shipping, but it'll take you a few weeks to get... I'm looking at getting this done, just finally found a place that'll do mandrel bends for me, so now I've got to get my money together to order it all at once...

Damn, a few days from tmtuning that is fast, I have talked to several people who ordered small items from them and it took a week or two just to get those. I also talked to a guy here in AZ that ordered a euro MK4 R32 bumper from them and it took about 2 months to get it. So a few days is amazing, if that is what they told you, jump on that.

Like I said in the previous post this is quickly becoming the most popular rear end mod out there so if you are thinking of doing this I would say act fast before places like oempl.us and tmtuning realize that they can charge a lot more for this. Good luck to all of those who are willing to go this route:thumbup:
