You can tell whereabouts a Mk V was manufactured from the 11th character of the chassis number. For example, a "W" in WVWZZZ1KZ5W888888 would indicate that the Mk V was manufactured in Wolfsburg, Germany. Other codes are:
W: Wolfsburg, Germany
U: South Africa

Are the cars made in WOlfsburg better than South Africa??
Its all the same, some VWs are made in Mexico and they are fine too. Its all about them being engineered by a bunch of germans with their intolerance to any deviation from mathematecal perfection. As long as the engineers are german thats all that is important.

No worries cause south african car plants like the one that makes the 3 series has great reputations for quality! Either way it looks like we can't go wrong.

its not the place of assembly its the minds that engeneered it, but mexicos plants have been updated alot and are closely watch for quality assurance.

There are two other possibilities where the Golf can be produced in Europe:
- Mosel/Germany
- Brussels/Belgium

No strike was on the plant, they where just looking for better conditions and after a while the manage to made an agreement, and by the way in Puebla Mexico is not made the GTI, just the GLI and the Bettle.
I have a GLI and you would have to see the very good job they make, volkswagen quality is the best everywhere they have a plant, same conditions.

I like the fact that my car comes from Wolfsburg because of the first car i actually paid for myself in highschool. It was a 86 Jetta GLI Wolfsburg edition dark grey with the red striping.......much like my United Grey with the Evil red grin on the front.

I owned a 1994 Golf III. VW first made their transition to Mexico in 1993. I hate to say this but my Golf III was a lemon, a piece of sh$t  .
Compression problems, AC issues, rear brake light went bad in one month, not to mention my engine light came on an would not go off, with the dealer scratching their heads.
In 1984, I owned a Turbo Diesel (Wolfsburg) Jetta. I best car I ever owned.
I am read to come back to the "fatherland" with the MKV. :drinking:

I find it funny/frustrating that I've been looking at getting a GTI, built in South Africa for the Australian market.
Or possibly the Ford Focus ST (XR5), built in Germany!
Nothing against the South Africans - but I'd prefer to get my German designed car direct from the Motherland!

just so you know, the first character in the VIN represents the region that it was made, so "W" represents Germany, not necessarily Wolfsburg. the 11th character (right before the serial #) represents the location, "W" there representing Wolfsburg.
so, my passat had a VIN# wvwma23b9yeXXXXXX, the 11th character is "E" which represents Emden.
my gti had a vin # WVWFV71K47WXXXXXX, the 11th character is W which represents Wolfsburg.
both are made in germany, hence both start with "W"

All MkV GTI's and Rabbits are made in Wolfsburg, Germany. The MkV Jetta and the MkV GLI are made in Mexico, and the EOS is made in Portugal. As for the Passat, I'll have to double check that, I don't k now off the top of my head but I'm almost certain it's Germany.

one of the selling points of all 3 dealerships that i shopped before making the purchase was that all GTIs are going to be made in wolfsburg. i know you can never trust a sales guy, but low and behold my sticker says wolfsburg. i don't think that my transmission was made in japan though; maybe that is just a DSG thing. G'damn it... My GLI was made in Mexico... Well hopefully the Mexican cars are better now, I know my friend had a Nissan Sentra Spec-V that he bought new, by 20,000 miles of pussy foot driving it was burning oil already. Hopefully VW Quality control is more stringent.
At least my DSG was built in Germany

VWs built in Mexico are of poor quality. No TDIs were ever made in Mexico I believe. The rest of VW that WERE made there, drivers reported mechanical faults as well as those simple ones like window won't close or clunky (loose) interior.

my 2003 spec v's engine blew at 68,000ish mi, nissan didn't replace it because it wasn't recalled yet (summer of '05). sure enough a few months ago, a recall notice came in the mail explaining just that.
