Think I totaled my car today. Was on a 4 lane busy road, in the innermost (fast) lane, nothing in front of me coming up to a light. The right hand lane was backed up 10 cars or so due to a xfer trailer truck. As I was approaching the light a car in the right lane came over into my lane, I swerved hard to avoid them, at the same exact second the light turned red, I swerved into the turning lane, then had to swerve back as there were cars in the turning lane. So while all the car dodging is going on (like a freaking aquatread commercial or some shit) I am having to speed up/swerve/hit the brakes ect... I forget about the red light, and bam hit a tahoe (which didn't move an inch). The car I originally dodged didn't stop, so I got ticketed for "disregarding a red light", which I'm going to court and can probably get reduced to something hopefully. Both me and the other people I hit have State Farm so at least that will cut down some crap in the process.

Both uni-body frame rails in the front are swayed over to the left about 6". The engine and trans shifted up and over to the left about 6". Oil leaking every where, radiator, and inter cooler are busted, all motor mounts, right front wheel's bent, noise pipe, intake, engine cover, all the accessories on the front of the engine are fubar'd because the frame rail's pushed into them, grill and all thats done, and suspension is broke. My big ass broke the seatbelt ratchet too, and collapsed the steering column. Both headlights are goners, battery, fuse box, firewall is bent, inner fender aprons, bumper, fenders, bumper reinforcement, both doors because fenders pushed back into the doors, and the a-pillar is done for. When the tow truck driver put it into gear it made a horrible crunch (DSG). I'm pretty sure its gone. I have State Farm and they total a car at 65% of the value, so like 12-13K will do it which I hope. Have gap insurance so no biggie there. Every one was ok, got a seat belt burn on my neck (like a carpet burn), and bruised chest where the seatbelt was, air bags didn't deploy as it was an off center crash (I swerved at the last second).

Sucks I know, I'll have pics tomorrow.

Kinda glad actually, I had to roll over a few grand from my F-150 into this lease, so I get a fresh start which is nice. Think I'm going to try to find a Candy White with DSG and Sunroof with the FSI in it and get one of those.

so the guy went all the way from the far right lane, across 4 lanes of traffic into the left most lane and cut in front of you? crazy...

No it was a 4 lane road + turning lane, 5 lanes total, 2 in each direction + turning lane.

Yea everyone's ok, the people I hit work in the same office complex as I am at. They called a coworker to come get them to go back to work, and I hitched a ride with them back to work.

I just hope it totals (which I'm pretty sure it will). Good thing is if it doesn't its at the best body shop in town. If anyone on the north/west side of Atlanta has a wreck, and don't know a body shop to trust hit up Black and Fuller. I'm a auto insurance appraiser, and I deal with a lot of body shops, B&F are the shit by far. So if it has to be fixed at least I know it will be right.

Damn, sorry about the car but way more importantly Im glad your ok. Like you said, the Tahoe didnt move and your car crumpled like a tin can (of course, thats probably what saved you as it absorbed the impact). Either way, you got lucky. I got rear ended a couple weeks ago and Im not quite right in the head yet. I still get very nervous (I mean crazy nervous) at every light or stop when a car is coming up behind me. I have been in accidents before and I know this will wear off, but when you get back behind the wheel, dont feel bad if you got the jitters for awhile. After all, it wasnt your fault.

dibs on his seats!!!!

doubtful he's parting out parts. He could probably get away with selling anything aftermarket, but as for the car's stock features, in order for insurance to give him the money for it, he'd have to leave the seats.

Besides.... that's a pretty dick move, to say the least.

I'm gonna go ahead and agree with this, but its pretty much every man for himself. This isn't as bad as the SRTforums.com threads tho. It was 1 comment about being glad that the person was ok, and the other 25 comments were dibs on parts...:bellyroll:

Thanks all, and who ever can go steal shit off of it if State Farm will let you.

Est was up to 10k and they were still working on it, thats not including diminished value poss 2,300$. So the loss is up to 12,3oo now, think its got to be 13,500ish to total.

Updated OP with pix.

I have a big purple stripe going across my chest from the seat belt.... but a couple vicatin, and some vodka and Cokes make it way way better.

Damn, that's really unfortunate. As everyone else has said though, at least you're totally fine.

I know every insurance company has different policies, but Liberty Mutual's is that if the firewall sustains any damage whatsoever the car is totaled; even if it somehow doesn't reach the percentage threshold. I guess they figure just about any wreck that's substantial enough to affect the firewall is going to require a ridiculous amount of repair anyway.

At least you can start over with a brand new GTI. Any options you regretted not getting (or for that matter, even getting) first time around?

Sorry to hear that man. If the engine got pushed back, or the intake manifold broke its most likely to be totaled..good luck.

Honestly, best thing to take away from this is to realize how safe this car is, its a turbo, hatchback, fast little sexy car, and it keeps everyone inside safe when shit like this happens. Thats a definate  for the GTI! So all u had was the bruise from the belt? Made out pretty good, thank god for airbags, foam crumple zones and quality construction

Absolutely, glad you're ok - I mean going up against a Tank, I mean Tahoe which is essentially a brick wall, and a little seaet belt rash, you were looked out for.

^^^ I agree... I figure if this car is good enough for the Germans on the Autobahn, then it's good enough for me!

Sorry for no updates. The car did total, gap covered the rest.

Sorry guys I left the VW family. With the company car and gas card I got something I always wanted but never wanted to deal with as a daily driver. Plus it's an 06 and a friend of mine that is a sales manager at a Ford store here sold it to me for what he had in it (14k). I'm happy with my new toy.

It's fully loaded. AC, Hard/Soft/Bikini tops and Tonneu cover, Dana 44 axles, Lockers front and rear, sound bar, 6 disc in dash changer, sirius, every thing that you could get on a Rubicon. Was 30k$ 2 years ago, walked out the door for a little under 15k$.

Enjoy the Jeep. I love mine.

I always wanted a Jeep. I would never own one if I had to daily drive it, hot in the summer, cold in the winter, noisy, harsh ride all that's a pain in the ass. But as a secondary car/toy yea there was nothing else I wanted more.

The GTI was nice, I loved the car but something decently priced, and a secondary car this is what I wanted.

I've always loved off roading, have a Kawasaki KFX700 ATV, worked for Land Rover a little under 2 years and they train every employee (even porters, receptionists ect....) in off road driving courses because the dealers are required to take the customers off road every quarter so everyone has to be able to help them if they get stuck. So the bug bit me and I've been trained properly by guys who compete in the Camel trophy stuff. So now I have something capable of doing it at a decent price.

Plus the Rubicon version really only needs a lift and a little bit of armoring to make it a completely "built" jeep. It comes with Dana 44 axles, and lockers front and rear, thats the biggest expense building a Jeep to go anywhere. Plus the additional skid plates it comes with ect.. It's a 6 speed manual, 4.0L inline 6 (which 06 was the last year for the 4.0) both the tranny and engine are pretty much indestructible. Now if I can keep my wallet closed until I pay off my credit card.....

I need someone to come help me take off this damn hard top and put it in the basement so I can put the bikini on, may be a 12 pack thrown in for the help.

Just read the whole thread. The new car looks fun! Total bummer about your GTI. Glad you are safe and unharmed though. I guess you did find the silver lining in the whole ordeal. Sorry you are leaving the VW family but at least you're driving away in a fun car and not a Kia Rio.
