Off the bat, I really like it. I bought it to take place of my 2003 Rubicon that gets 15mpg
Anyway, I picked it up at Carmax.
21,100 out the door.
26630 miles
Leather interior
Heated Seats
Sun Roof
DSG
Auto Climate
NAV System
18" wheels w/ summer tires (brand new)
Its only half fast though  My 98 Impreza is about 3x as fast, but thats a fully built car.
Ive had the car for 7 days, carmax return policy is 5 days so now Im stuck with it, oh well!
Anway, some questions/problems I have about/with it.
My tail pipes are dark gray... Im undecided if this is carbon build up or what... Soap and water did not remove it, but it is defiantly not supposed to be on there.
My wheels are different then my friend's. His 18" Hufs are polished alum. Mine appear to be painted and blended into polished alum. Looks OEM... Unsure.
I have a CEL! Yay, go me. To take it to CarMax or VW for it? P2293. Carmax warranty is 30 days, so if it blows up they gota cover it
It clunks. This annoys me and I know it isnt supposed to do it. Turning hard either way and then accelerating from a dead stop you will hear something under the car clunk. Pulling out of my driveway at an angle, you hear a loud clunk. You can also feel them though the floor of the car.
Thats all I can think of right now:smile:

Thats one risk you will always take buying a used car. The clunks are not something new. Actually a lot of people have problems with that. Even my GTI does it once in a while and it's new. I guess take it to a dealer.
Now the wheels i believe you have the Denvers kinda hard to tell from the pic. But then again those look like 18's so im not sure.
The dark tailpipes prob everyone has cause our cars tend to burn oil as it says in the manual. Also since you bought it used you don't know if the oil was changed at the right intervals so that could be a reason. Old oil = bad.
On the CEL take it to the dealer. CarMax can't do crap other than send the car to a VW dealer. BTW i hate CarMax. Just my 2 cents.

Yea I hate carmax too... When I left they said Id get a carwash, detail, full tank of gas, and an oil change. took me about 5min to realize I had gotten none of that and had to take it back to get it done... that took 2hours.
The wheels are 18", I had to double take since they look small.

Hmm cause it doesn't look like they have that gun metal finish on the insides....i don't think they are the actual actual huffs....

well, they are the denvers. they are 17in not 18.

Could be aftermarket Huffs, or the original owner could have painted them, either way we need better pics.

Falken 452's clearly state 225/40ZR18 on them.
You cant see the tires here, but u can see the tail pipes.

hufs usually have a distinct look on them. like a polished dark color. those look a little more like the denvers to me. i guess we need better pics of the wheels to determine it. but yeah, just take it to the dealer for everything. they should honor the warranty unless the car was modified and they know about it. (ie. chipping)

maybe the previous owner refinished huffs? or possibly they are reps?
the tail pipes look normal to me.

Curbing was courtesy of a large suburban in ocean city... apparently he never saw me when running me off the road. Im not worried about it right now.

Hmm...
Something looks strange about those rims. Design wise, they look somewhere between Hufs and Denvers.
They're definitely not OEM Hufs though.

Thats a good price if you have a fully loaded one like his. Remember he also has the dsg which is automatically an extra 1k.

yeah, I saw a lot of used ones with 18-19k on em for under 20k BUT they were base models ie. not the ones I wanted, those were more like 22-23k$

Yea it is a bit to high but how else would Carmax make business ....thats why i hate carmax. They buy your car for crap and then overcharge people for it. But i guess its the peoples fault. Oh well.

Yeah I think you paid a bit too much, I recently got a 2007 with the same options and only 5000k for $22500 with an additional 2 year extended warranty. But if you are happy with it I wouldn't worry about it.

I guess some people don't realize there are other states out there with differing market values. In a warm area that doesn't get snow, like MD used cars can get a premium price. I ran into the same thing here in Central OR. Yes we get snow but it's a joke and more importantly there's no salt on the roads. Where in NY you deal with salt and other shit for 4 - 6 months of the year (used to live in Syracuse) so used vehicles don't hold their value for that reason.
Location, location, location.

The wheels were probably refinished. My wheels look the same. They were the factory style when i first looked at the car, but when I went back the dealer had them refinished because they had been curbed. Now they are all one color.

$21K out the door is not a bad deal. CARMAX only takes the cherries, so you know the car was inspected up and down and is straight as an arrow.

Fully loaded and with tax and title? I think it would cost more than a "couple thousand"...

I was looking at almost 30k out the door on one fully loaded.
The finish on the wheels is interesting... inside of the horse shoes are light gray, then the outside is painted almost silver, blending into the center thats polished

Three times as fast would mean that your Impreza does 0-60mph in ~ 2 seconds, the 1/4 mile in the ~4.9seconds and tops out at almost 400mph! I find that hard to believe.

How can I actually find out what my wheels are? They look exactly the same as my friends jsut a different color...
And my Subaru puts down 366awhp... so its alot faster then the gti lol.

Easy mate.. Take a tiny mirror and try to find the manufacturer behind the wheel spokes. You should see the BBS logo behind one of the spokes as part of the casting and also a VW part number if you have good eyesight.
That's how I found out Ronal made my rims lol!
Nice ride btw.. you don't know how many ppl want that gunmetal look on your exhaust tips, takes a whole lot of carbon buildup to get that permanant!
g60_corrado_91
06-27-2008, 05:28 PM
Yeah, exhaust is definitely carbon buildup, not from burning oil as someone else mentioned. I don't know about the wheels. Severn is on the western shore off of 301 right? I used to live in Centreville on the eastern shore. Nice ride.

Yeah but carbon build up comes from these to things....burned oil and overly rich air/fuel mixtures. Either way the oil our cars burn adds to the dark pipes. Any car that burns oil will have a dark pipe.

I guess to an extent, but I know my GTI didn't burn oil when it was brand new and stock; the tips still got black after a few days with the stock DP. These engines do run rich. Obviously now it's blacker because I'm probably running richer and with a catless DP.

Yup..mines stock (9.5 k) and it still gets dark even though i burn very little oil. I gave up on cleaning it.

I think i know whats making the rims look so different. If you look at them closely you can see that the gray on the outside parts where the air nozzle is seems to be polished unlike the other parts where the gray is. Maybe it's just the pictures making it look like that.
