I'm going nutz trying to figure out what to get to replace my recently totaled 2006 GTI, and have looked at all kinds of vehicles. I drove the newly released Jetta Wolfsburg Edition today and think its cheap and crappy. Saw the Rabbit and sort of like it, but its only got 150HP. But, then I saw a Passat Turbo (Komfort) Wagon. It's kind of nice, a little big, got the 2.0T and DSG, and lots of standard features. Only problem is that MSRO is about $29,000 with invoice about $27,000. I have managed to talk my dealer into $26,750 plus tax and license (which includes the $1,000 VW loyalty rebate). When you add Ca. State sales tax of about $1,900 and license at another $400 the total cost goes over $29,000. Should I do this?

The 08 Rabbit has 170hp and 177lbs tq.I test drove a Passat 2.0t sedan it was nice, but the GTI is better. if you like the wagon look buy the A3.

FYI...the passat does NOT have dsg. that should be a big factor right there, if you're a dsg fan.

my parents have a passat with the 3.6 liter v6 engine, i would go that route instead of the 2.0T if i were in the market for a passat...the 3.6 is faster than our GTI's lol

well of course it's gonna be faster than a GTI, it's 280 hp. and yea, the 2.0T on the passat is going to be significantly slower with a regular automatic, plus the weight disadvantage

That car is A LOT more $$$ than the 2.0. GTI all the way, G T I.

Ok, here's a couple of things you need to know.

The Passat Wagon Does NOT have the DSG. It does have paddle shifters but no DSG, just a well put together slush box.

The loyalty rebate on a Passat is $2000 NOT $1000! Your dealer either does not know how to use the programs or they are screwing with you.

If you need more space than the GTI the Passat wagon is very nice. With some work from Eibach it could be made to handle exceptionally well.

Will a Passat Wagon Ever be as quick or responsive as a GTI? No. Can you fit 5 people, 5 Mtn Bikes, and a boat in a GTI? No.

If you want a great deal on a GTI or a Passat or anything else V Dub just email me.

i vote for the Jetta wagon when it comes out if you can wait. or get a 4 door gti while you can. or to save money, find a used certified vw. i got my 2006 GLI for $17k with 31k miles, has warranty until 74k with the certified warranty. you can talk them down a lot more when it's used.

passat is a lot different from a gti...i assume you've driven it? i've driven an a4 a handful of times and the b platform just seems a lot less "fun" to me and a lot more "serious." if thats what you want and can afford it, then go for it.

personally, while i like the bigger cars i don't think i'd ever get one.

2000 loyalty is nice but aren't 07 Passats 8000 off. I picked up my 07 3.6 which MSRP'd at 38,950 for 8k off and 60 month 0% financing. There were 2 wagons left when I bought my sedan. I would ask the dealer to search for any 07's before buying a 08 at or near MSRP.

Good luck!

Darn it, where I live (about half way between San Francisco and LA) we don't have big VW dealers. So, my options are very limited. I actually would like to get another GTI; the Passat is too big and doesn't handle like the GTI. Unless I go up to San Jose or down to LA my choice for a GTI is limited to a white one with manual tranny. I guess it's time to hit the road.

Get a turbo Jetta without the wagon.

Wagons are for old people.

A turbo Jetta, thats leaves the option of GLI, or Jetta Wolfsburg...

i own a gti with dsg, and i've test driven a passat 3.6 auto. the 3.6 def. has power, but the tranny pales in comparison to the dsg. several times during the test drive, it would "hunt" for gears. and also several times, the shifting was not smooth at all.

the handling on the passat wasn't good at all, compared to the gti either.

Ok, I found a nice 2006 GTI to possibly replace the one that got totalled. It has about 16,000 miles and is the same color (UG), but has a manual tranny instead of DSG and no moonroof. Before I bought my last GTI I always had cars with manual transmissions. What is driving the GTI like with a manual tranny? I can probably get it for about $18,000.

I think it helps to have the sport package and the 18's but its size does make it feel less fun to drive than any small car (GTI). My Passat doesn't seem to hunt for gears but there does seem to be a lag in shifts if using the paddles, no hard shifts so far with just 3k on the clock. Overall the car drives great for a family rig and has plenty of power. A little high on the cost side for sure unless you buy one like I did - 8k off and 0% is a pretty nice incentive.

Personally, I can't wait for the Jetta wagon. With the 2.0T (I'll double check to see if the 2.0T will be coming with the DSG or the slushy) and then just dump it on some Eibach gear. Once you do that it'll basically be a a GTI 4 Door stretch.

Wish there was a way to graft the power lift gate from a Passat Wagon onto a MKV. How pimp would it be to have a power lift gate on a GTI or Golf?

6 spd's are where it's at, I dont know how ppl can have DSG. I mean, it's amazing technology but maybe its the snow that keeps me away from an automatic tranny.

why not get another GTI ??? were you happy with the one you had?

I do love the GTI and have found one almost exactly like the one I lost right here in my town: a low mileage 2006 UG with 18's. But, no moonroof and no DSG. I've checked a lot of the posts on the 6MT and think I could get into it, and I don't think i'll miss the moonroof either. Just have to get a good price from the dealer. It's either that or travel to the Bay area or LA where dealers are offering me fairly good deals.
