Hey everyone, I got my baby yesterday!

Anyone know the easiest way to start the car, and leave it running while the doors are locked.. I'm assuming you can manually unlock the doors with a spare key - but is there any other way to accomplish this? at least without having to carry around a spare?

alright.. wasnt sure if that made enough sense for others to understand.

hah, I just want to be able to start it up to let it warm up a bit without someone being able to drive off with it.

Is remote-start even an available option from VW?

I just run the turbo timer on my WRX when I want to warm the car up. Just start it, set a time on it (the timer), pull out the key, lock the doors and wait. Plus, after a hard drive, you get a little piece of mind from a short cool down (the turbo timer's actual job) which should help keep the turbo happy.

remote starters can be almost installed on every car. I have seen a vw with a remote starter.

They do have a remote starter I will try to find the site for you. In the meantime due to the no lock out feature (keeps your from locking your keys in your car) you have to use another key.

Use the valet key with a remote starter. Yu can have a remote start put on this car. I plan on doing one sometime soon, Just have to convince the wife that we have the money for it.

On the point of the turbo and engine heat has anyone else noticed that the MKV cooling fan is not as active...on my MKIV it was always coming on after a long journey...mine was remarkably quiet today.

As there is never a reason to have the car running with no one in it, not sure this should be an issue.

What possible reason could you have?

Common sense would tell you that you never, ever, let a cold car idle.

Um, you let it idle for just a few min before you dash off down the road. If not you will be needing a new turbo. Same reason why you should not shut the car right off after a spirited run or a long trip at high speeds.

Good advice.

I've done exactly the same thing in mine, and works fine.
However it's kind of hard to get it work and make the connections on your own on a gti. I had it done with a specialist on electronics.

One of the few things i couldn't do on my own...

is there some sort of stock option? I like the vw remote, and would hate to give it up for some other brands remote control just to get remote start.

I think there isn't such a thing...

My understanding is that leaving a car idle from cold is bad for the catalytic converter due to the richness of the fuel mixture when starting from cold. You are right in that you need to warm things up a bit, but I've been told the best way to do this is to simply drive the car gently/normally for 10 minutes or so before letting rip.

After a spirited drive, then yes, leaving the car to idle for a bit, allowing the turbo to cool down is the way to go.

Don't go aftermarket on the remote start like Avital, Viper etc...they mess with the computer so much and screw up your alarm. They also drain battery like a mofo!

According to an article I read (in Automobile Magazine I believe, don't remember), warming up a car in the morning is a waste of gas and time. Modern engines don't need to be warmed up before use. As long as you start easy without over reving you should be fine. Even if you warm up the car you should start easy anyways.
