View Full Version : Is it possible to mod the steering wheel?

Hi guys,

Just a little bit complaint about my new gti. The steering wheel is very stable all the time, but it needs quite some strength to move at low speed. I tested drive a bmw 328x with sport package before I went for gti, the (only) one advantage of 328 is that the steering wheel is so smooth and easy to use at low speed, you can move it with a single finger!

So I wonder if anybody know that is it possible to mod the steering wheel. Maybe it is a stupid question, coz I read a lot on this forum and didn't catch a clue. thx!!

No, the power steering boost is not adjustable on '07 & '08 GTI's.

I love my steering feel. It actually feels like I'm driving a car.

i don't find it difficult to turn at low speeds.... my fiancee's monte carlo's on the other hand, i feel like i'm working out when i drive his cars at any speed.

As far as modding it, i'm not sure if it's possible... but with electronics i guess almost anything is possible.

put smaller/skinnier tires on...there will be less traction with the road so the wheel should turn easier :bellyroll:

(There needs to be a better emoticon for sarcasm  )

Jeez you bought the wrong car. I am no weight lifter and the steering response is perfect.

I thought that the steering weight was adjustable through VAG software.
Correct me if I'm wrong.

if its not then you would need to get a stronger PS pump amoung other things i would assume.

You're joking, right? I actually like the fact that it feels like I'm turning the wheel rather than pretending like a small child from the back seat of the car.

You're wrong...sort of. It was adjustable in the '05.5 and '06 MkV's. But as I stated above it is not in the '07 and '08 models.

OK. I can live with that anyway. too bad it is not adjustable in 07 and 08. all I need is to work out,:happyanim:

i found the steering assist on 06 GTI was way too sensative and obtrusive at times...i mean if i was to sneeze while going in a str8 line, the car would swerve all over...so i had to change the steering assist from 5 to 3. I tried 0, but it was too stiff...it sucks that 07 and 08 got jipped and can't change it.

I can stick my index finger out straight like I'm pointing at the gauges, rest the bottom of my finger in the corner above the MDF and Radio Seek buttons and turn the wheel.

I love the steering response, it feels dead on for me.

Just my $0.02.

I find the steering reponse on the 08 GTi to be excellent. It's no Porsche, but it's fun in the twisties, as many on this forum will attest.

I was all set to get an 07 Civic Si, but the overboosted steering was actually a deal-breaker for me. I know of two guys who bought new Si's, then sold them withiin 3-4 months because of the overboosted steering. One of them said it was really nasty at speed on I-95 here -- his story. I had a 2003 EP3 (Si) and the steering was not flaky like on the newer cars. Remember, this is IMHO.

BTW, just 2 lb. of air pressure swing on the fronts of some FWD cars is something you can feel. On my S2000 (RWD), I can also feel the difference: softer tires = greater effort/input required on the rim of the steering wheel. I generally run +2lb (MAX) over the MFR. suggested pressure without adverse wear effects. Also results in slightly better MPG. :happyanim:

Try driving a car with no power steering lol. The best way I can compare it to is having the car off and turning the wheel.
