not sure but it probably does store a soft code somewhere's that says sometrhing to the effect of "max speed reached".. i know every GM vehicle since 2000.. and some of them earlier than that when you hit the governor it stores a generic software code specific to each brand of vehicle they have but the caption is pretty much "Speed limiter engaged" or "Max Speed Reached"

Meat
01-10-2008, 10:23 AM
There is no code for any maximum speed violation. The only "max speed violation" code is if you rev higher than the stock rev-limiter. Then a code will come up saying "Maximum Engine Speed Exceeded"

oh wow surprising... a lot of car companies store at least something if you hit your speed limit whether its 110 120 or 130... interesting.. good to know

driving in germany just seems a lot different from the USA. no one on the road over there fucks around.

and how do you europeans tell which lane your supposed to be in? all you have is dotted white lines! wheres teh double yellow!

came reallllllly close to renting a 280 hp porsche in munchen, germany. would have been straight up nutty.

Morph
01-10-2008, 12:17 PM
Well generally we have 3 lains: right = slow , middle = faster , left = fastest , I don't see how's that different from the usa?

Main difference in Germany compared to other european country's: wider lains, and people never get in the way of faster cars on the left lane!!  It's like some 'code' over there:w00t:

Currently own 02' f150 Harley Supercharged, Basically a four door lightning with all the necessary tweaks to get me to near 500 HP. Going to buy 08 GTi and get rid of my gas hog ... anyway Ford installs "flight recorders" in their performance vehicles which logs speed, g's, brakes ect... and insurance companies use this information to deny claims on accidents caused by "unsafe/Illegal" driving. I know someone who had a 02' Lightning and totaled it at 110 from going airborne over some tracks and the insurance company denied his claim because of this log. Just thought I would add my 2 cents.

Very stable, it felt like I could probably go 15 mph faster (granted if I had the horsepower) and still be stable. I had to maneuver around a few things in my path while I was in the triple digits, but the car stayed planted and was very polite.

im getting a rabbit this week hopefully it handles better than my tt.i hit 100 once in my tt, but i totaled it then, and now im just afraid to go over the speed limit. I cant figure out how i lost control either. i was going about 100 in wv and the road was slick and i had blizzacks on i dont know if that matters but i guess i went to slow down IN the turn and it just started wobbling back and forth to fast for me to do anything. does that make sense how i lost control?

yeah, you didn't know what you were doing. Never go over 90-100 on slick roads, and that's with fresh rubber. God basically told you to slow your ass down via a wall. You're just lucky you didn't kill anyone, or yourself.

265 km p/h on a downhill at 2am on a week night. Clock is over-rated, but deduct 10% and an additional 3 km p/h (maximum exaggeration allowed by EU standards) it adds up to a nice... round... 235.5 km p/h! Just as advertised. Sounded like a Hurricane fighter jet at that speed, but car was solid. Not to be done again though, not worth the risk when you hit the slightest bump in the road and feel the lift. Scary.

fusion01

45-50 MPH. Still breaking in.

Car's engine has already been run-in at factory, so not so much of an issue from what I've heard. But if you do, you NEED to give variation to the engine's revs so to make all settle in nicely. If you keep rev's low, you end up running the new-ish parts in too consistently. Best to keep giving the odd punch on the accelerator and let engine rev freely than keep it under 4k or so for 1000 miles. Sure this is reiterated elsewhere on the net too (applies to all new cars as of late).

BMW do the same on the M series cars. They can download the ecu which gives all the telemetry, great for getting out of warrenty claims.

Don't see how this affects the warranty. Nowhere does it state that if you go over a designated speed that you'll void it. Nowhere. Even over the 235 km max speed (as it's a max speed, right?!). Interesting point though, I should download it and keep on file! Cheers!

280km/h. Downhill on german highway near EUROSPEEDWAY LAUSITZ. On straight highway 270km/h with 19" wheels (according to speedometer)

That has got to be the fastest surely? I can't see anyone beating that...? Suppose the engine mods helped, not the wheels though, unless terribly light. And all legal.

122 mph it was a bit down hill. It was on the way to the track. Let me tell you that i did not know i was doing that much untill i looked down and saw the speedo. I never checked the speedomoter if it is on at that speed but since its an 2008 and i have checked other speed, i think that it was my actuall speed. I also once topped out 4th and the speedometer read about 110-111mph so i figured that even at high speeds the 2008 are accurate. Anybody know what 4th on a DSG Tops out at?

300kmh is possible as the final gearing ratio allows for 187mph at the redline.

It may have been an indicated 300kmh though...yes?

The power you would need to reach that and how long it would take to get it there is debateable.

I've not really tried stretching the legs on mine, but I've had 146mph on the GPS on a fairly short stretch and it was still pulling like a train!

Very interesting. 140 miles p/h = 224 km p/h. 'Y' rated tyres are tested / speed-rated based on a maximum of 290 km p/h.

224 km p/h is way under the potential maximum. Therefore safe. Unless you consider the ratings are BS? Hmmmm....

153mph @2am on a sunday and I'm not saying where because the spot is never patrolled and I kinda wanna try to break my record in the same spot once the turbo goes in and I have some new tires, kinda smoked on one a bit too much since that happened. I must say though 153 did not feel all that crazy. I've done 120 in the rain and that didn't feel that crazy either. On the other side of things when I threw freight at nights at safeway one of my co-workers had a c5 z06 and 176 did feel crazy, hell anything over 120 felt crazy in that. The rabbit feels much more firmly planted but then again it isn't rwd, 600lbs lighter with a potent v8 breakin the tires loose all the time. The craziest and dumbest speed I've hit was somewhere past 110 in my old cavalier in AZ in the middle of the night. couldn't say how fast I was going cuz the spedo only hits 110 but the governor doesn't kick with cruise on and I went a few miles with the needle burried and the speed broke (waranty claim at a dealer in New Mexico who understands these things) 85 in that cavalier was more sketchy than 153 in the rabbit and thats just how you drive in the middle of nowhere

I'm going to go ahead and say that 153 is due to out terrible speedometers. I don't think it was actually that fast seeing as that is around the top speed of the GTI and the rabbit is packing less HP with the same frontal area. It was still probably around 140 which is fast, but not 153.

I hit a deer at 65 in a 5000 lb truck. It was pretty scarey, lots of force and bent sheet metal. I wouldnt want that coming at me through the windshield. Do they make a cow-catcher for the GTI? That would be a sick mod.

Hit 135 in northern VT on Route 91 way up in Northeast Kingdom. Car felt like it was pretty much out of breath at that point. No one around, but did manage to get tagged with Laser from friendly Vermont State Cop sitting at truck weight stop. After getting pulled over (I thought I was extremely burnt toast), he explained he was becoming familiar with Laser and was basically on training with it. He kindly asked me to slow down - in case I hit a moose. Sure enough, about 5 mi down the road, a big female moose came up the bank and started towards the road, I was going 70 now, and slowed down easily, at 130 I would have been meatcake* (a moose weighs 1000 lb plus easy).

* Meatcake - the late, great George Carlin's take on meatloaf, it isn't meatloaf, its MEATCAKE!

how do you guys deal with the lack of downforce on your cars? i hit about 80-90 regular driving and on turns and bends the car just doesnt have alot of downward force, i mean, my uncles Porsche Turbo easily hit 120 on bends, and it stuck to the ground like glue

Needle said 140 miles (225 km/h)
Climatronic said 130 miles (210 km/h).

The car could have gone faster, but I freaked out after a couple of minutes.

130 mph on the Autostrada in Italy, and that was with 4 people in the car. The posted speed limit was 100 K/H, but nobody pays attention to that. Everybody speeds over there.

How can you have a screen name like "MAXGTITURBO" and not have taken your car over the 100mph mark yet? lol.
I'd almost expect to hear your screen name said loudly from a deep voice with an echo. kinda like M-M-MONSTER TRUCK MADNESS!!!! lol.

Last week, driving down to SC, 2am, not a car on the road for miles...Car showed about 140mph, while my Garmin GPS showed 133mph. I have it recorded and saved on my GPS's Trip info. The car would not go any faster than that....

240 km/h (according to the speedo; unmodified 2007 MY08 MkV Golf GTI, DSG, 3-door), slightly downhill.

I'm waiting for an appropriate opportunity (preferably on level ground) to push it further and see how fast it can go.

No such problem here (perfectly fine at well over the 130-145 km/h you refer to).

I imagine you're seeing this because VW increased the ride height of the North American version of the Golf GTI (apparently because of really crappy roads in the USA), and also enabled a speed limiter?
