Dec 27th I'll be flying to London for my first time. The Mrs and I will be spending most of our time in Edinburgh and will stick around for Hogmanay.

I'm looking for any and all advice from things I should see, places I may want to stay, where to avoid, etc etc.

I'm not one to be in crazy wild crowds so I think the night of the 31st I'll keep away from the street party crowd and watch the fireworks from a nice hotel. Any places you guys/gals can recommend would be greatly appreciated!

My girl is fascinated with Scottish history so I figured before we look at buying a house and what not that we'd get out to Europe a few times.

As the time to take my trip grows closer I'd like to propose an idea to any locals in the area.

My fiancé and I are awfully interested in taking in the local atmosphere and seeing the culture first hand.

We of course want to experience the great history of Scotland touring the castles and trails. During the fireworks celebration we will be staying somewhere in the city for a day or two, but would like to spend the rest of our time on the out skirting areas taking in the local cuisine, customs, and ethnicity.

From my understanding we will arrive in London the 28th of December at 0900 in the morning from there we will travel to Edinburgh via rail. My fiancé works an international visitor program at the US State Department. She is using her resources to try and find us a family to stay with.

Would anyone here be willing to let her and I bunk at your place for a few days? This would be great being that we are on a tight budget.

Any other recommendations would be obliged.

I'm trying to nail down a few places in London or Edinburgh to spend the evening so I can avoid having to shell out for hotels. I had a few friends in london but haven't heard back from em.

The two nights in Edinburgh for new years is going to drain me $$$$
