I've been a VW owner for a while now and really haven't driven anything else. Are there lots of ppl here who are driving their first VW or first Golf? I'm curious what made you switch. I'm telling you though once you own the Golf u'll be hooked on it for life. Get ready for an obsession.

I've recently switched from an Audi TT but I suppose that doesn't count as its still a VAG product. Infact my last 5 cars have been either VWs or Audis

Hey i'm coming from the darkside.. BMW lol!! Actually I don't think its much of a change, the E36s should be similar to the Mk5. You know, a small nice handling box. Cant wait for these cars to arrive around me

I ran an A3 1.8T Sport 5 years ago before my TT. I loved my A3, it was the first car that I modded and weent on the track with

Yep I'm new to VW. My current car (I am picking up my Golf in two weeks) is a Toyota Celica T Sport- which is a lot of fun - valve lift at 6200 revs and goers on up to aboput 8500. Think I will have to get used to driving a bit differntly. But the Golf really impresed me on my test drive - plus there's space in the back for people - not legless children!
I have loved my Celica - but its time to move on - and I am really looking forward to it...

Jumping ship from the Honda hatchback world to the VW hatchback world and I hope it's a good decision :) Not a fan of the newest Civics but really fond of the new Golfs

Used to drive an MG MGF 1.8 152bhp Variable valve non-turbo. 0-60 about 7 secs dead, but makes a lot of noise to get there. Pretty reliable for a Brit car, MGs get unfair press which helped lead to their untimely demise.
The GTI is effortless, plenty of torque thanks to the turbo and FSI combination. :burnrubber:
My wife now drives the MG, but I borrow it from time to time to enjoy rear-wheel drive antics!

My mate drives a Focus RS over here in Blighty, it's a smidge quicker than the GTi, and looks the part with all those bodywork mod's, but it's renowned for its torque-steer, with all that power going through front wheels, bit like the new Vauxhall Opel Astra VXR - 240bph (Boxster territory! )
Cheers, Chalky

I've been into the GTI for aslong as I can remember. I'm currently driving a 1990 Mazda Miata (first car, 16th birthday gift to myself). Great first car, had lots of fun with it and definetly got my moneys worth ($800 :p) out of it. I've now saved up enough money to put down a decent payment but I'm waiting for all the hype to settle down a bit because the local dealer here thinks he can screw people with a $3000 mark up. As much as I want a GTI right now, I think I can wait a few more months for a good deal. I had my dad test drive it for his approval and he approved. GTI coming to illusion in July.

Had various motors over the years, always had a couple of old classic Volkswagens (currently these are a Beetle & Karmann Ghia)
I'm going from a 1.9 TDi (100 BHP) Polo to the new GTI, my Polo has more torque and quicker 0-60 than the Polo GTI so its certainly not slow but I can't wait for that 200 bhp:thumbsup:
One of my favourite non Volkswagen was the Vauxhall Calibra 4x4 2.0 Turbo, I had it direct from Vauxhall, didn't realise but it was chipped and pumped out around 280 bhp and it was seriously quick! Trouble was the engine just wasn't upto it, at around 40,000 miles I had problems with the 4 x 4 system and engine management - hence why I sold it:wink:

I actually am coming from an 03' Mitsu EVO. I sold it to a friend that HAD to have it so, I sold it to him. Now the GTI is my new weapon of choice. To be honest though I am not new to VW products though. I owned a 91' G60 Corrado, 2000 Passat, Audi Allroad 2.7T wagon, Audi A4 quattro (wifes car). As much as I loved my Mitsu I just always missed a good quality cockpit to sit in. I was actually in the market for a Lotus Exige and was going to get a beater to drive during the week. Since this car has become available(finally!!!) I decided to get my daily driver 1st, then in a year or so get the Exige or stretch a bit and get a used 911 GT3 I would LOVE to have.

newbie here, i pick up my V on Monday. Had a 91 GTI bout 6 years ago and absolutly loved it. I will be trading in the infamous HEMI for my new GTI. Had the Dodge Magnum RT 340 HP 390 FT LB of torque. Had to get away from Dodge, the car kept having to many unexcusable problems.

I currently drive a 2003 Mitsubishi Verada AWD. It's basically the same as the Diamante but l believe the Diamante was not available in North America with All Wheel Drive.
It's a great car, but now l want to downsize.
The GTi is my choice, now all l have to do is wait for the September delivery.

I`ve come from a Subaru Impreza STI, with Prodrive Performance Pack on board.
It was a VERY quick car, but I wanted a complete change, for various reasons, and the Mk V GTI fitted the bill perfectly..............especially as it`s now been re-mapped to 245 bhp, and 290 ft/lbs of torque.
I am so impressed with this car, being the first VW I have ever owned BTW, and I can see me swapping it for the Mk VI GTI only

1st car was a honda accord (83) that was my mothers', then to a 86 Nissan 300zx as a b-day gift and finally when I saved enough money, I bought a 62 Beetle. I have the 62 and the 300zx now but the 300zx is sitting in the back and I'm trying to get rid of it. Waiting until next year when I can possibly get the GTI (but there is no way I'm gonna get rid of my beetle:bow: )
So I guess I've been a VW lover for a very long time but only an owner for almost a year now:thumbup:

Well, I'm coming from a C32. The C32 is quicker - that's all. The GTI does everything else much better. The steering, handling and the overall feel of the car is just that much sharper and more driver orientated than the C32. Also, the levels of MB service in SA is appalling to say the least. In the 2 years I had the C32, it went to the dealership about 10 times for various problems. They just don't give a damn about you as the customer. Anyway, after the GTI has been chipped I will have the same straightline performance as the C32.
Before the C32 I have owned a lot of VW's.

I'm coming from a 96 Chevy Blazer...yes...sad I know. This GTI will be the first car that I wanted to drive instead of needing to drive. My car arrives at the dealer on Sat....boy I can't wait. For now I'll go back to reading more reviews, watching more videos, and getting pissed off that it's going to be in Fast and the Furious 3.

A gti will not give you the same straightline performance chipped as your C32.. we're talking 350HP compared to maybe 245 in a chipped Gti..

I beg to differ. 2 of my friends has chipped GTI's with about 240-250hp. The one guy raced an M3 (which has the same perf as the C32), and was ahead until about 220. After that the M3 was quicker. The C32 is not only heavier (1650kg vs 1350kg), but it also loses more power because it is rwd. And though it is supercharged, it loses out more at altitude (about 5000ft above sea level) than the GTI. My C32 was much quicker at the coast than at altitude. At a drag racing event last year this guy (chipped GTI) ran a 14.4. That's about the same M3's run here. I know it is a lot slower than in the US, but have crappy fuel here.

The list of cars is endless (at least 15 and some are just a distant memory), but the last 3 I guess are relevant in that only one was comparable to the Mk V Gti I now drive.
Liberty was the latest - wife's choice
Before the Liberty - Subaru WRX - my choice
Before the WRX - Holden Berlina - just happened.
Gti is by far the best out of that lot.

I had Civic SI's and EX's for most of the 90's, then bagged a revamped SR20 in the from of a 2000 Sentra SE. That was totaled by a 90 year old fart, so I reluctantly went to a SE-R Spec-V, which I ended up really enjoying for the 2 years I spent with her. Until the day I test drove the MKV, which haunted the driver in me so badly, I nearly risked my 3 relationship to get it.
Man...I'm glad it all eventually worked out for the best....I would've REALLY missed that girl.

first vw here.
my old cars were-
miata, z3, 2 subarus and s2000.
That's cool. You're patience will definitely pay-off.
I'd hate to say it though, you'll miss the Miata's handling. (Which, btw, is ther perfect car to learn how to really drive well.) The GTI is a FWD so it's not nearly as "tossable" as your NA---especially on the track.
However, you'll get addicted to the torque and plush cabin. The German engineering is pretty tight too. (But makes it more expensive to do your own maintenance work!)
Honestly, the VW's I've owned in the past were junk. I'm glad they've got their act together with the new Golf/GTI. This car is a gem.

First car was a '97 Chevy Cavalier. Traded that in for my '02 Camaro SS (which I still have). Just bought my '06 GTI last week and I love it. Best car I've had so far, even though it has half the power of the SS.

1986 Nissan Maxima (lived long good life)
1984 Nissan 300ZX Turbo Anniversary Edition
Getting a CW Rabbit 5-speed, hopefully it comes in this Week. I was/am a Nissan man, I got the rabbit cuz it seemed the best option between price/option/sportyness/looks, and i needed a car i can drive in the winter and somthing i don't have to worrie about. I have always liked previous golfs, I hope this car can live up to my expectations.
The whole VW thing is just untill I can get back into a Z car.

I've been a VW owner for a while now and really haven't driven anything else. Are there lots of ppl here who are driving their first VW or first Golf? I'm curious what made you switch. I'm telling you though once you own the Golf u'll be hooked on it for life. Get ready for an obsession. :wub:I thought I was going to be hooked on the Honda Prelude for life too. And then there was the Civic for life. Then there was the Jeep for life. Hmmm....I see a pattern here. It's my first VW. But if I know me, I'll move on.

It's true, you do return to Deutschland sooner or later.
I sold my trusty '91 Corolla and bought the MkV. My first new car in 20 years. I've had a '65 Mustang, '79 Dodge van, '71 Audi 100LS, '89 VW Fox GL, '79 Dasher wagon, '75 Chevy Luv, '85 Nissan pickup, and still have the family truckster: '96 Mercury Villager. Looking back, I can see that I've owned a lot of crappy cars. :iono:

This is my first golf. Previous car was a suzuki swift GTi which I had for 11 years.
The reason I chose the golf was because it is quite spacious for a small car, and it was better equipped than the other cars I looked at.

My history of cars:
94 Toyota Tercel - Had to take an emergency trip to Bend, OR. Fell asleep at wheel, woke up and wrapped her around a tree :frown:
95 Toyotal Tercel - Younger brother now drives this one lol
00 Honda Civic Si - Very fun car, still miss this one, but I traded it in for...
01 Acura Integra Type R - VERY fun car and was quick for what it had in it. Lot of bad attention though.
01 Honda S2000 - Nothing like top down driving on a summer night
and now an 06 MVK GTI. This is the first VW I've ever owned, and it's a very nice change of pace to be inside a car that's quiet, still quick, and a little more civilized. That Type R and S2000 don't even have sound deadening in their interiors lol. The car is just so unassuming as well, so no bad attention anymore, only good from those who know  .

This GTI is my first brand new car. All my others have cost < 1k or have been hand-me-downs. My first was a 76 Toyota Corolla that could only make it up hills in reverse. Then came a lifted 83 Toyota 4x4 which i got for 700 took it off-roading a ton of times and ran over just aobut everything i could find then sold for 1200. After that i drove around an old 240z to see if i wanted to buy it but changed my mind, then my old bosses RHD mini. I finnaly ended up with a 97 toyota corolla that i managed to put 176k miles on. All i can say to this GTI is wow... I love hatchbacks and have always wanted a GTI. Im glad i waited for the mkv!

Traded a Nissan Spec-V for the GTI and never looked back. So much better. Had the Spec for 2 years and had $1500 into it bolt-ons, springs, wheels and never was able to get traction to break into the 14's. My first run in the GTI got a 14.9 stock.

'79 Honda Civic hatchback (rust bucket, had to use duct tape to pass inspection)
'83 Chevy Cavalier (I'll never buy a Chevy again if I can help it :bellyroll: )
'85 Dodge Colt GTS Turbo (this was my first stick, this car was a blast)
'85 Toyota Supra (this car was scary in wet weather  )
'93 Ford Escort GT (I would definitely buy a Ford again, nice car)
'98 Honda Civic EX (nice engine, reliable, :iono: )
'06 VW GTI (the baddest of the bunch :headbang: )

This is a major improvement from my past 2 cars:
1994 Oldsmoblile Cutlass Ciera -taken by relatives
1997 Buick Park Avenue - the boat- my high mileage car.
The olds was fun to drive, the buick would put me to sleep, but the GTI is amazing compared to them. I've finally found the one.

Hello all, New to the forum and thought I would share some info on previous cars:
1) 1991 Lancer GSR hatch - great first car. Handled well copped abuse +
2) 1970 Mazda 1300 sedan. Bought with only 30,000 original miles on the clock. Was immaculate and drove like a new car.
3) 2001 Daihatsu Sirion GTvi - nice car but I had neverending problems with it. Gave up on the thing
4) 2001 Nissan 200SX. Has been brilliant. I'll sorely miss the car. Great performance, good fuel economy, but now my lease is coming up, so it's time for a change
5) 1972 Mazda RX3. Bought this as a project car, and is looking awesome. Power is out of this world with a 13b turbo conversion and a long list of other modifications to cope with the power.
I've placed an order on my first European car! A new Golf DSG GTi which will hopefully be delivered over the next month or two. Hopefully I won't be disappointed (I'm sure I won't).
In all honesty, I've been a strong beleiver in Japanese cars, but the Golf GTi is a package that is hard to go past. Here we have the Mazda 3 MPS that has recently been released, however its interior and classiness leaves alot to be desired compared to the Golf.

83-90 83 VW Rabbit GTI rear ended at a stoplight
89-04 89 VW Golf wife's car, traded in for a Miata
90-91 89 VW Jetta GLI stolen, never recovered
91-present 91 VW GTI 16V still going, needs headliner, paint, and exhaust
03-05 03 Mazda Miata wife decided she was afraid to drive it, traded in for the 06 GTI
04-present VW GTI 1.8T bought for wife, never any problems!
06-present VW GTI 2.0T my new toy, no problems!

I came from an '02 MINI Cooper that I bought 4 years ago. I've been a GTI owner since August 1st and haven't missed my MINI at all.
ye old MINI:
http://static.flickr.com/82/213747602_a85ac6a58f_m.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/ferneaux/213747602/)
Here are a few of the differences:
I can fit 4 - 5 times as many groceries in the boot before having to fold down the seats.
I don't have to worry if the car is going to stall out on me while driving. (a software glitch that seems to affect every year of the MINI)
I don't have to lean forward in my seat & crane my neck to see the traffic signal. (the MINI has a really short windshield.)
The GTI doesn't sound like a piece of plastic that's about to fall apart if I go over small bumps. (i'm talking smaller than those reflector/lane bumps they stick in the roads.)
...those are just a few that I wanted to ramble off with.
I bought/kept the MINI because I've always enjoyed the classic Mini style and attitude.... in retrospect, maybe I shouldn't have. In the early '90s, I owned a VW Fox that never gave me any trouble and have always recommended the VW brand to my $$$ conscious friends. Having grown up in Germany (Bad Kreuznach & Mannheim), I feel a bit biased towards German engineering... so I'm really happy I made the switch back to VW.

03 saturn ion. i got 10 grand as an inheritance so i started looking around for a used gti, almost bought a r32 but it was gone before i got to the dealer. Then a week after that i saw an add for my gti in the paper for 18,500. Turns out i test drove it a week before for 22,500. So i skipped school and bought it then had to deal with my car. It was used with 2270 miles on it. The guy traded it in for a huge lose to buy a truck. i'm a bit worried cause i doubt he took the time to break it in right but there was no other way i was gonna get a new gti so i'm still happy. its a bm with the xm package and 18" huffs.
