What does VW require to be serviced and what's the charge for this?

I want to get some facts before I call my dealer and get an appointment.

all they do is change your oil. for about 90 bux.

i changed my own oil and just turned off the service notice @ 3k miles.

What's the recommended oil to use? I'll obviously use synthetic, but what brand/weight?

5w40 Amsoil the best out there.

vw simply recommends an oil that meets the VW 502.00 standard. a complete list of the oils that meet the standard can be found here: http://www.vw.com/vwcom/content/objects/pdf/service_maint/oilchart.pdf

all the oils that meet the standard will also say so on the label.

Yes and if you use oils other than what are on the list you are still covered under the Magnuson-Moss Act. And BTW, Amsoil warranties their oil.

my concern is not the warranty, its just that that vw sets those standards for a reason.

from what i've read, amsoil claims their oils meet the VW 502.00 standard, but they haven't paid the money to actually have the test done to prove they meet the standard. whether you want to believe them is up to you. i don't want this to degenerate into a stupid argument about oils, so let's just leave it at that.

I think its pretty weird how, if you finance a car you don't get that service light.... but if you lease it, that service light will NOT be late!.. its like the dealership is reminding you that they still own you.

i used motul 0w-40.

remember to reset the service notice: turn key to on, hold the 0.0 then the SERVICE warning should appear, then disappear, them push the M on the other side of the dash.

The manual says use a 5/40 synthetic based oil. My dealer uses Castrol Syntec and said it runs about $56 or so, not bad for a dealer. We charge $80 for a Mobil 1 syn oil change, which is nuts. We also use BG lubricants and products. They swear by their synthetic 0-40 which he said would run me $5 something a quart. I plan to stick to the 5-40 recommendation though. Thanks for that chart.

Huh? My car was almost totally paid for the day I bought it.

A friend of mine told me that if you plan on changing your oil yourself or have your mechanic do it (which wouldn't void the warranty if they follow the standards), you should buy the VW oil filter. can't quite remember what the reason was, a sensor maybe. his cousin works at an audi dealership and told him about this. anyone know anything about this?

Just had mine done,

topped up all fluids, changed oil, 5 liters of 5 W 40, and filter

checked all the tire pressures

washed and waxed the car as well, for $85 CDN

I have 3500 miles on the car and no service light....I am getting the oil changed at 5k. I also got the VW service package when I purchased the car...good investment for the money. Plus they keep all the stuff on record for me.

Really, where are you stats on that? Please post them for all to see and I will forward your claim to Amsoil Corporate as well.

And BTW, for an "engineering student" shouldn't you know how to spell?

you weren't ignored...a better idea would probably be to ask your dealer, not us. i've never even heard of a program like that, so it might be something your dealer does. can you get your oil changed at any vw dealer, or do you have to go to the dealer you bought your car?

blackmkv
06-08-2006, 09:48 PM
i could get it changed at any dealer. its a pretty good deal but i plan on doing alot to my car and dont want them snooping around to void warranty. i know they try and find anything to void warranties down here.

5w- synthetic is what VW says. All the information is in the owners manual , other than the prices of service. There is no 3k service. Ya and i wouldnt risk using any other oil than what vw recommends. Moss act requires a lawyer and other redtape. Why not just use what VW says to use. Which by the way Castrol is on the list. And everybody had opionions, and mine is CASTROL is the best you can get. Mobil 1 is based on graphite.

My BG rep says I can run their 0-30 Hi/Lo oil synthetic with no problems. I will tell you that Mobil 1 has a great rep and the choice of many manufacturers, but certain cars have issues with it. Mustang Cobras with the 32V DOHC engine do not last using Mobil 1. I believe the valve stem seals begin leaking prematurely. It would be nice to hear from some of the Euro guys that have some miles on these 2.0's as to which oils do well.

You should be able to cancel it. I have the same thing as you and it is an awesome deal...that's why I got it. My dealership knows I mod my cars...they bought my last car from me. When I stopped by shortly after getting the GTI they were actually surprised I didn't have more done. Don't worry about voiding the warranty...they have to prove the mod caused the problem.

Wildhare, seems like you have some kind of super strong brand loyalty. lol. wow. you ripped the poor kid apart. lol. hahaha

BTW - when comparing products, you shouldn't use there own publications, they will be bias to a degree. best source would come from a 3rd party that compared oil's. I'm sure some company must have done this! consumer reports maybe? ( they aren't that good either though)

When you buy in to what a company pitches, try telling that person anything. Look at Jiffy Lubes. They have programmed people to 3000 mile service intervals and allegiance like you wouldn't believe. I can say from personal experience, my dad's boss back in the early to late 80's had a 82 Trans Am that he ran Ammsoil in with unbelievable longivity. It went over 300,000 miles before needing engine work. I finally found the Castrol 5/40 at Autozone for $5.49. After seeing the cartridge filter, I am thinking about letting the dealer do it depending on where it is located. I just wish they still sold the German made Castrol Syntec.

thomaschh
07-06-2006, 02:17 PM
My dealer charges only around $60 for the oil changes, which seems like a deal to me. Seeing as how Syntec runs about $45/case and you're into the dealer for about $20 for a filter, why not have them just do it? Plus the added benefit is that you have proven record of the work rather than having to keep track of your receipts in case you have warranty issues.

In the end, what's the big deal? $60 done at the dealer or $40 plus a couple hours of your timeto do it yourself... This to me is like the argument people give about premium vs. regular gas. In the end it's a $1 difference per tank. WTBD?

Actually being able to spell is COMPLETLY unrelated to intellgence. A person who has issues spelling just has a lapse in a brain synapse and simply has trouble remembering what letters go where. It makes no connection to how intelligent a person is.

Wantagti

If the filter is $20, I'll probably let them have the fun. That's $50 doing it myself!!

In RJ's defence, knowing how to spell IS NOT a requisite to being an engineering student. Bad grammar and spelling is pretty common. No offence intended, but has anyone actually read an engineering article?

My 2006 Rabbit manual says "use high-quality SYNTHETIC_BASED oil that meets the 502.00 standard ..." Castrol SYntec is a Group III synthetic = synthetic based and contains mineral blends. AMSOIL, for example, is FULL synthetic (Group IV), meaning it has a synthetic base and no mixture of mineral oils, just synthetic. I am not trying to promote AMSOIL, I am sure there are more full synthetic oils out there. Just wanted to note that people use 'full synthetic' very loose, when there are variations, some oils are 'more synthetic than others'
