a brand new GTI? 18? holy moly, no wonder its 5k!
I had a brand new Polo 1.4 @ 18 and my insurance was a hair under 2k, in your case it;s because its a very powerful car, and your young as well which doesnt help, and your a man.
I have a new golf 1.6 FSI and I got this years insurance with Lloyds TSB and it was about half the price of any other siprisingly :) £520
But here's a few to try:
Norwich Union
Lloyds TSB
Direct Line
Quinn
Hastings
Tesco
But you wont be able to get a quote online for most because of the powerfulu car and young age; you'll have to call them. Trust me don't do it online because after spending 10 minutes filling in each form youll be SO angry when it says 'please call' I found this the hard way.
AVOID things like confused.com too, they say they are amazing ut they are pants, they take premiums themselves!
Good luck and let us know how it goes

Can I be old-manish here? I really wouldn't recommend the GTI as a first car, unless you're migrating from Formula Fords or have had advanced driver training (Think: ARDS license, class C at least) you won't have the experience to handle safely that amount of power, especially not as a first car.
If you really want some power and a nice car consider a Golf GT TSI, either 120PS 1.4 or 170PS 1.4 variants? That will be a lot better as a first car and better on the insurance (though still not cheap).
If you are that determined to get a GTI as your first car then by all means that's your prerogative but just my 2P on the matter.

I do agree with cmd, it's definately insane! I wanted the TSI as my second because insurance would be cheaper as it's a 1.4 (with added spice), but i couldnt afford the 18k they cost so i stretched to 15k (-7k trade for my polo) for the 1.6 FSI, it may seem lame in comparison to the GTI but it's a great car, not had a single problem with it, very fuel economic, and insurance friendly.
Have you figured out how much petrol would cost you on a GTI? I don't know myself but i'd imagine it'd be alot more than a FSI or TSI.
Even with a FSI/TSI @ 18 you'll still have a better ride than all your mates (not making the assumption your a show off), you should test drive a GT and a FSI before spending 20k+ on a GTI as a first car!
My personal plan is to part x my Golf FSI about 6 months after the Mk6 comes out (probably late2008/early 2009) because my '56 FSI should fetch about 10-11k. And as the Mk6 will be out this will lower the price of the Mk5 GTI allowing me to get one for not much extra at all.
Your GTI will set you back atleast £32k in your first year, maybe more, and even in second year your insurance will still be about £4k, then third say £3k, only on your fourth year will it be nice.
But it's your choice

The 1.6 FSI is a damn good engine, very useable. I've been in a couple of, er, friendly sprints with some 1.6 engines, they're better IMO than a 2.0FSI which is unduly thirsty for not much gain. If you can stretch to a TSI though then that's the one to go for.
Again, not to put a damper on anything, just speaking from (in some cases hard-won) experience here.

I have the 1.4 S atm and love the feel for the golf, my mum is having it in novemember and im putting in a for a new one, my mind was set on a GTI until i came to reality and priced things up ontop of the car, so il see what i can afford im looking at the TSI and it does look like a good car.
The only reason i want a GTI is because 1 of my mates has one and i drove it the other night and by god i felt in love..... but he drives DSG in i prefer stick. but il see il work out to see if i can afford it.
