I'd change it sooner. At least by 2k. You're car is pretty much done with "break-in" by then. But some will wait until 5k. Some will change it as soon as 100 miles. It all depends on who you talk to. This is an age old debate on every vehicle forum known to man. My viewpoint stands at this: Majority of your "metal flake/debris" wear and tear happens sooner in the engines life than later. So I feel you should get that stuff out of there and not let it float around for 5k miles. Just my opinion along with a dash of common sense:iono:

1500 for the first change, 3000 for the second, then every 3000 miles thereafter.

How much is an oil change from VW? OR are most of you guys just going to local mechanics?

every 2500 miles, religously, overkill, but like doing it, keeps me happy:laugh:

So your owner's manual does not mention it?

Why would VW state that the first oil change should be carried out at 5K, the second at 10K and then every 10K afterwards if it was not safe to do so. Surely, they developed the engine, so they must know it's limitations.
If you want to change your oil every 3K then that is your prerogative, but I for one have no qualms about doing it as per the service manual.
