So after much debate between the stock clean-look versus the Euro-OEM look that I was after, I decided to commit and install my Euro/German License Plate the right way.

Hey, I figured that I could always order a replacement bumper for $120 if I hated it. So here it is... Euro Plate DIY. You guys in Europe probably think I'm crazy. :iono:

(BTW, I LOVE the look. No regrets. I had this one dub guy stare at it and asked me if I had my car shipped from Europe! )

Parts Needed:

VW OEM Euro Plate Bracket (http://www.hillsideimports.com just call them--their website sucks)
Self-locking plastic anchors (included in the kit)
Authentic Euro/German License Plate (http://licenseplates.tv)

TIP: Know the meaning of the characters on the plate to create an authentic plate. Here are your references:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/License_plate
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/German_car_number_plates
http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bild:FE-Buchstaben.png
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wolfsburg

Tools Needed:

5/16" drill bit (the service manual says the hole are 7.7mm + 0.2mm)
two smaller drill bits (for pilot holes)
hard rubber mallet
masking tape
70% Isopropyl Alchohol
3M EXTERIOR mounting tape (4011 or 4010 - find it at Target)
white wax pencil (optional)
spray wax (optional)
microfiber towel (optional)
an extra pair of hands (optional)

Time Needed:
About an hour. Depends how anal you are.

Can it be undone?
If you have about $120 for a new upper bumper and an additional hour to install it.

STEP 0 - Wash & Prep:
Wash, dry then wax your bumper.

STEP 1 - Measure:

Test fit the Euro license bracket to your bumper. The bracket defnitely has a top and bottom so inspect it carefully from the reverse-side. You can tell the bottom section by inspecting the notches on the sides--these hang over your bumper.

Once you understand the fit, place some masking tape on the edges to mark the placement. You can fine-tune the symmetry of the fit but aligning the lower corners of the bracket to the hexagonal openings in the lower grill.

Re-check your measurements---to save some tears & money later.
UPDATE: If you remove the grille/upper bumper, there are markings of where you need to drill the holes. Use this instead!! Removing the grille. http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?id=2490755

STEP 2 - Mark, Drill Holes & Mount the Bracket:

With the bracket held in place (by tape or your buddy), mark the center of the first hole using the wax pencil. Start with the top left or top right hole & work clockwise.
OR better yet, drill a small pilot hole while your buddy holds the plate. TIP: Start with the smallest drill bit and progress to the larger ones. Carefully centering the pilot hole is key.
Insert the first plastic anchor/pin to hold the bracket in place (but do not push the center pin to lock it yet) and proceed to the next hole.
When all four holes are drilled, remove plate bracket and check to see that the drilled holes are clean. If not, re-drill carefully and get a clean hole. Remove any plastic flakes and wipe with wax & MF towel.
Remount the bracket and insert the anchors.
Pushing the pins-in is a bitch (especially the ones on the top). It will take quite a bit of effort. If possible push it with the back of a screwdriver first. Then, use a metal tip and a rubber mallet. Remember, it's a bumper so it's hard to crack but then again, use your judgement!

TIP: When drilling, put masking tape on your drill bit as a guide so you don't drill deeper than you need to.

STEP 3: Surface Prep & Mounting the Plate

Once you're done with the bracket, clean the surface of the bracket with rubbing alcholol and place a masking tape with a center mark on the top edge.
Test mount the plate. Then, slightly bend the plate to the surface of the bracket.
Clean the back of the licnese plate with alcohol. Wait and make sure it's dry.
Place strips of 3M/Scotch mounting tape on key sections: the edges, center and the spaces. No need to go nuts with the tape.
Align the plate and test fit first. Then, remove backing from the tape and mount it.
Press from the center and work your way out. Now, make sure you hold the plate with your buddy for about 30 seconds to 1 minute--to give the tape a chance to adhere to the surface. At first the tape might not seem tacky enough but I noticed that the bond becoumes stronger as it sets.

STEP 4: Clean-up:

Spray a thin coat of spray wax to your plate and bracket and wipe-it-off with a microfiber towel.
Next day, check that all the edges of the plates are still nicely flush and that the tape is nicely bonded to the surface.
Enjoy your Euro look!

Yeah, in many states (including Kentucky), you're only required to have official plates on the back/rear of the car. This means that you can put anything you want on the front.

I'd have thought that was illegal everywhere....

I think most cops here will recognize that my front plates "ain't from 'round here".

It's illegal to use anything other than the plate you were issued by the local road and traffic authority here in Australia... :frown:

You can't even make a replica plate (like from a different material such as polycarbonate) with your own actual rego number on it, let alone put a totally false one on...

That's crazy talk....

Looks good tho. pretty authentic...

yeah, i think its a bit more lenient here in most states.. as the euro plate is nowhere near the actual size of our standard "legit" plates.

Its obvious its not for marking purposes

Kills the look of the grille? are you kidding?? Those square U.S plates are 1000 times worse for looks...

The euro plates look like they're supposed to be there.

I think he means that if you don't need one at all then why in the world put a Euro one on? Personally I will just leave my GTi's front naked (the same way I like my motorcycles). IMHO it looks best with no plate on it at all.

I dont get it??:iono: why ruin the front if your not required front plates?

Rabbit GTI

i would only do it if i lived in a state where there was no front tag required...an authentic wolfsburg germany plate is cash money, i'd put one of them on any vdub in a heartbeat.

but it is a taste that some dont like, which is cool too

Everyone has different tastes...

For me, I think the wide Euro plate actually adds to the overall look of the car. It creates a perception of a wider stance. Also, the graphic elements and color of the German plates adds an extra something-something to the look too--without being too bling. It's also a signal to other vdubbers who can appreciate the authenticity (they give me thumbs-up as they pass).

It's all about understated uniqueness, authenticity--and showing love for the dub.

Thats awesome.. As you can see in my sig, I drove with a real euro plate here in miami for over 1 year and never got pulled over by a cop!!!! I always had my US plate next to my drivers seat just in case..

I want to do this. I have the mounting bracket and hardware since before I even had the GTI in the driveway.. I have been to chicken to drill.

So how do I remove the black bumper part so I can find these markings in the inside so that I can drill?

My GTi might be comming as a dealer trade from NJ. The dealer asked if it was ok if it came with a plate holder on the front. If it arrives with one, im all for the Euro plate look. I just hope some of the holes meet up or can be covered by it.

If they installed the plates according to VW specs, the Euro plate should cover it up completely. Keep your fingers crossed!

My GTI sports an American-sized plate in Euro-Fashion. :headbang: It was issued to me in Mannheim, Germany thru the Military. My GTI came with the bracket already attached with screws. I would also be interested in finding out where the self-locking brackets are available. Very nice writeup, tho!

I wonder if Europeans have put american plates on their cars?

ZiRiS
08-19-2007, 11:06 PM
No, the Europeans do not put American Plates on their cars because they are hard to come by and it is strictly forbidden over there. If caught the punishment is something like an insanely expensive ticket due on the spot. If you don't have the cash on you, then park your car and go straight to jail. No, no travelling to the nearest ATM, just go straight to jail. They are pretty harsh over there. Well, in Germany anyways. I dunno about the rest of Europe. I could be mistaken about this info, it might be just a hefty fine due within like the next coupla days, but I'm pretty sure its pay on the spot.

You can actually do this with a front tag. I did it. What I did was take the bottom two holes for the front plate and screwed the euro plate over "the spirit of america" quote on the bottom of my MA plate. I think it looks pretty bad ass, but then again I only did it tonight. We'll see if I still like it in a couple of weeks.

How could you cut the holes for a regular plate? I mean I need to have my front plate but Im also going to have my custom plate on the lower part. I had and old one but I need to drill holes for the new one.

you get pulled over for having a euro plate, mind as well have the regular plate on, it dosent really make a big difference in appearance ther just plates. i think going plate less in the front is the best, just got to hide from the cops

Currently have a flag-plate the same as my avatar on the front, looks pretty good except whomever mounted the bracket didn't center it correctly, so I figured I'd go with the german style plate.

Received my plate, looks awesome. Just waiting for my mounting bracket to arrive now.
Will be following your guide very carefully. Thanks for the post ewoo.

...Hey, I figured that I could always order a replacement bumper for $120 if I hated it.

Looks very nice. I was running a plate I had from Germany on my old Jeep Wrangler. Thinking I'd really like to put one on my GTI. Just in-case things go south, where can one get a replacement bumper for 120 dollars?
