Take apart seat drawer assembly...

Attach bracket, then frame.
The screw holes on the bottom of the seat become more obvious, once the frame is put in place. Don't worry about the many, many other holes.
TIP! Using a cordless screwdriver (with torx bit attachment) to secure the frame is MUCH easier as you can apply pressure AND screw it in at the same time. Otherwise, trying to thread the holes with the screws is much more difficult.

My kit was missing one torx screw and one pop rivet, but I made it work with other hardware.

What are the dimensions of the drawer?

What are the dimensions of the drawer?
10" wide, 5" long, 2.5" deep
Has a 1.5kg weight limit (3.3 lbs.) molded on the drawer. Makes sense since anything really heavy would probably rip the screws out of the bottom of the seat.

Really quick question...
Does the drawer latch shut? It looks like there may be a spring-loaded catch release on the drawer handle, but I cannot tell. Under hard braking at VIR, I could actually get the armrest to slide forward... I would hate it if the drawers did the same.
Yes, the drawer does latch shut. I didn't really study the release mechanism, but it seems pretty secure, especially if there is less than 3 lbs. of stuff in there.

did I miss the part number for the drawers?

Honestly, I don't think anyone posted them (I don't know them).
OEMPL.US sells it for $89/side.
Hillside Imports (when their site works) sells for around $75/side (if I remember)
There were 2 specific p/ns on the parts (one of the frame, one on the draw itself) but I'm sure there is a single part number for the assembly.

Excellent write up with great pics... :coolpics:
So what sort of stuff can you fit in there now?? I'm thinking a wallet, ipod and that's about it??
Fortunately, our GTI's come with the little mini glove box under the light switch, so I'll wait and see if that provides enough storage. If not, this under seat drawer looks like a great OEM install.
Thanks for the great write up. :respekt:

BTW, is the picture of the opened-drawer in its fully-extended position?

Great write up, Thanks.
-Why remove the 3 clips from the frame, and do you put them back in after install? (I haven't installed mine yet, but I was able to remove the drawer from the frame just by lifting the large bracket).
-Since your install, have you noticed any new/extra squeaks/rattles in the area?
Thanks again!

It would appear that the clips hold tension on the rail system, so I didn't want to damage it when I removed the drawer from the frame.
No new squeaks/rattles in that area since the install.

Nice. I currently store my jumper cables from the previous car in that space under the drivers' seat. Also have the same mini-glovebox that Kirium described, but store my fuel receipts in there as I'm leasing my car.

I keep the receipts for tax and audit reasons as I'm a contractor. Receipts are an audit trail. Otherwise I could claim anything and get away with it.
I financed the car as a lease-to-buy. The reason I chose that as opposed to straight out finance-to-buy is to recoup some of the 47% tax I pay on every dollar I earn. I end up paying the same for the car, finance-wise, but recoup on all expenses (including monthly car payments) due to the leasing arrangement.

Does anyone know the part number of the small metal clip on one of the holes of the drawer? (The one that attaches to the side trim piece of the seat.)
That clip on mine is messed-up. I need to replace it.
Thanks!

Go to the dealer and ask them, they usually have a few parts in stock like that.
What is the significance of the small bracket you have to rivet onto the seat? It's impossible to tell with the pictures and i'm trying to figure out why I would need to go out and buy a rivet gun just for this DIY.
Otherwise, good write-up.

The small bracket is important structurally. (Germans like to over-engineer things.)
A decent rivet gun only costs about $17 at Home Depot. You can even find some for about $10 at some discount tool shop.

Excellent write-up, ünpimptheauto! A really great idea to utilize the space there for more cubby hole / storage space. I use the area for a CD Book. But I still think its f-in cool! Keep up the good work!

I'd like to install one of these in my passenger seat, however I have the stock Sattelite radio receiver installed there. Is there sufficient clearance to install the drawer also, or am I getting my hopes up? I don't want to buy one and have it not fit ;-(

They fit with the receiver in place without any trouble. The European blue tooth module mounts in that same location.

In case anybody needs to know, a 5/16 hex head socket fits perfectly in the seat bolts instead of the hard to find 10mm triple square sockets.

I realize this is an oldie to bump, but I have a question about your original images. on the right side of the floor under the passenger seat i see a grey square. I have nothing of the sort, rather, I have a large plastic cover on the left side of the floor under the seat. I realize the color is a coordination thing, but what is the function of the small cover/box on your floor board?

I pulled the cover off only to find a few plugs connected under there. Not sure what function they serve.

Under my passenger seat, there is a slightly raised, wide black plastic shroud of some sort. I notice it isn't on your vehicle. How much clearance is there between the drawer base and the floor? I'm trying to tell if i'm still able to fit the drawer assembly in there.

I was thinking of getting a set of drawers for my car. I am, of course, concerned about safety - so I was wondering:
Do you know the proper torque specification for re-attaching the seats to the car?
Thanks!!

I'm assuming that I can't do this mod as I have leather seats with premium stereo...under the passenger seat is the Satellite receiver, and under the driver's seat is the stereo's amp. I doubt there is enough clearance for this drawer also.

OP, any word about it???
Just completed this mod on my 07 Jetta GLI, drivers side. I know different car but this write up helped me a lot. I have leather seats and didn't have any issues with the mod using these instructions, except the screw that is on the far left, drivers side. This is the one that screws into the speed nut that is on the plastic trim, which in my case is too short. Not sure if anyone else had issues with that screw? I plan on looking for a slightly longer one.

Hey Ben you used to have a 318ti didn't you, still have it? (I recognized the name from your BMW links page) I bought the GTI to replace my totalled ti and I've found it is everything I wished the ti was.
Great DIY.

Just fitted the left one under the passenger seat of my Ozzie R32.
Thanks for the pix, helped to make the fit easier.
You dont need to remove the 3 clips to remove drawer, just lift the centre flap and pull.
I used the 2 rivets but you can use 2 self tapping screws if you wish.
The spring clip on the bracket can take a self tapper too. ( I found one that fitted)
Actually you can use self tappers for all the screws instead of the small thread cutting torx that come with the drawers, a lot easier if you dont have the tools.
Hardness factor: 2/10
