Sorry if I am posting an item that's covered elsewhere, but I could not find this by searching other forums. What's the best oil and filter for my 2007 GTI?

I would say, Motul X-Cess 5W40 (meets VW 502.00/505.00 requirements) and any Mahle or Bosch filter. Stay away from non VW approved oil, it's gonna pay long term.

MOTUL 8100 E-Teck 0w40!!!!

wix, mann filters are fine...(K&N came out with one for us just now i think..)

One thing is after some UOA, and being around Bob Is The Oil Guy forum (good stuff about oil and everything) the FSI like the 1.8L has a fuel dilution problem, making it really hard on the oil...you should prob change oil b4 the 10k mark because of it. But i do a UOA every 5-7k miles to see how the oil is going...

I used Elf Excellium for my first change based on reviews here and elsewhere. Where's a reasonably priced place for the Motul stuff?

I used Amsoil 5W40 European formula, very happy. But i might give a shot to Motul or ELF this time and see how it goes.

everyone's gonna say different. so long as it's on vw's approved 502.00 list, then you can use it,assuming that warranty is of concern to you.

i personally use motul e-tech 8100 0w-40. it's one of the few group v synthetics. even m1 0w-40 isn't a group v synthetic.

So long as it conforms to the Standard or Exceeds it... no one I say again, no one can void your warranty!

Just because a certain oil is NOT on their list does NOT and will NOT void your car warranty. If it "conforms to the standard" it will work just fine.

How much does it cost a company to get their oil certified? I don't understand the difficulty of getting on an Auto Manufacturers official, certified oil list if the product blows away all the competition.

I don't use stuff I can buy at WalMart on my car. I just don't feel it.

As for Penzoil, it doesn't have the 502.00 approvals, it's not OK for the 2.0 FSI, and yes, if you blow up your engine because you didn't use the right oil, the repairs will not covered by the warranty. I that's a verified fact, with my local dealer.

you are correct, however, whether or not it conforms might be up for debate - the manuf. might say it does, vw might say it does not. in which case, it's up to the courts to decide. if they decide that it does conform, then vw will have to honor warranty in that case, and if they decide it doesnt conform, then you're SOL, at least as far as vw is concerned. if the courts decide that it doesn't conform when they advertise that it does, then you might have a case against the oil manuf. for false advertising.

Anybody know what they use at the dealerships? Do they all use the same, or does it vary?

agpatel
06-21-2007, 10:02 PM
they all very, most use Castrol, some even use non VW 502.00 spec oil...i have seen...so it just matters

I will keep useing MOTUL 0w40 till i can no longer find it and use its replacment ow30 (or w/e else motul oil is 502 speced)

Like I said check out bobistheoilguy.com
As i said i have had very good UOA on the oils and plenty of additives left after 9k

Starts at a TBN at 11ish, and after 7k goes to 3.5ish, still VERY good got a gas engine

Isnt mobil 0w40 too thin? I read a lot of people were using it so i purchased some for myself, but was wondering if it is okay to run it?

agpatel
07-01-2007, 10:30 PM
motul/mobil 0w40 is not thin, the 0 is the winter viscosity (cold) and the 40 is the hot (100*C) viscosity...thus a 5w30 is thinner at normal operating temps then a 0w40, (40>30) also with the cold being 0 vs a 5, the oil pressure will come up faster and flow better then a 5 weight
