No worries, Berk. I guess we're even since I bailed on the morning part of the last SA GTG. There'll be plenty of opportunities to meet up and take pics. I want to do an evening/night photo shoot next. Right now I'm thinking of doing some HDR shots with Christmas lights.
Lou, I had a good time shooting and driving. Yeah, I agree, more cars would have added to the fun. City Park Road is a lot of fun--especially with no traffic. I've not had a chance to go through and post-process all the pics yet. We shot 190 images. I'll get you some images soon. I'll also post a few here and in the official Black Magic thread when they're ready. I'll get you high res images of any ones you like.

Attached are some pics I took at the December 2nd GTG. My GTI has the Huffs and no front plate, the other one is SAbroSO's ride (dropped with tinted headlights and taillights).
Next photo shoot I want to do some night shots (maybe even some HDR images) and more motion/rolling shots. I think Paalo was talking BBQ in Llano for our next GTG. Paalo, let us know when things calm down for you.

well, your best bet is to schedule an appointment with Rod East VW. Pretty straight up guys, but it takes a while to get to them, they are busy. Ancira VW, dont even bother. They have service advisors specialize on Kias trying to take care of VW business. Rod East is very good. Austin dealers, i have no idea
Turbo
12-30-2007, 03:12 PM
In the Austin area, there's Maund and Hewlett. Maund sucks. I have firends with horror stories about getting service through them.
Hewlett is where I bought. I've had them work on my car twice. No major complaints. I ended up having Maund do my 5K mile service because of a miscommunication with Hewlett about my appointment.
I don't know how mod-friendly either dealership is. I spoke with the parts guy at Maund trying to gauge a feel for their attitude toward modded vehicles and he didn't seem to think they even saw very many modded cars.
Sounds like Rod East VW in SA would be your best bet.

only dealt with them once.
dropped car off at 7:30 am. they called me at 4 pm to ask for specifics about the issues since they were about to pull my car in to look at it ............. both wound up being CND's.
sooooo, I got up stupid early on a day off, drove to austin, had a friend pick me up in austin and take me back home, and my car just sat on their lot for 8 and a half hours before they bothered to look at it - then they just cnd's both items.
If they'd had my car half a day I wouldn't be so annoyed, but no, they keep it all friggin' day.
Their mechanics could be great when they can find a problem.
Their organization and time/customer management is tragically flawed.

I just bought a 2007 Ford super crew 4X4 back in Oct of last year but thats cause you need a 4x4 truck out where I live. Nothing would get done if I'm always getting stuck in the sand with a 2wd truck. With gas going like crazy I had to buy a small car and VW had her. The Rabbit is my daily driver. I will say this, when the time comes I will either trade the Rabbit in for a GTI or keep it and buy a used Audi TT. I'm glad I stopped by to test drive the VW when I was on my way to buy a Scion tC (what was I thinking?) I ain't felt this happy with a car since my 5.0 Mustang days before they became beached whales. Well looking forward to meeting y'all on the 16th or 17th.

Anyone here (in central Texas) autocross? I'd been wanting to give it a try for years, so I finally joined Texas SPOKES (http://www.spokes.org). I managed to get a spot in their novice class all day this Saturday at Driveway Austin (http://www.drivewayaustin.com/) and am registered for my first official autocross there too on Sunday. Can't wait. :happyanim:
Any chance I'll see any fellow golfmkv.com memebers out there competing on Sunday? It'd be great to have more of us out there.

awesome that you registered for the novice event. you'll get a zillion runs and actually have a clue as to what you're doing on sunday. :)
you may see me sunday.
I probably did 20 events a year in 2005 and 2006 between spokes, sasca, tam, and special toyota and suby events.
it's a blast, just didn't have much time in 2007 so I only hit a couple.
Turbo
02-06-2008, 12:39 PM
Cool. Hope to see you Sunday.
Yeah, from the pre-event email outlining what will happen on Saturday, it's looking like my car is going to get roughly 16 runs throughout the day, some of them driven by the instructor, most by me. Anyway, I'm psyched about getting out on a track!
EL PAALO
02-06-2008, 02:15 PM
for future reference, the events further south (spokes at SAR, and sasca at AT&T) are less expensive although not enough to warrant the drive. they are however, not so overcrowded (like the 125 entrants on sunday) so there are generally more runs (6 to 8) and a shorter day.
sasca/att center requires your poi (proof of insurance) to be on file prior to their events in case you'd like to hit one of theirs (24 feb is the next).

Where can I learn more about this? I have never done any type of competative driving except drag racing and would like to try it out with my Rabbit. I know I won't win races but I would like to have fun. SAR and AT&T are close enough for me.

02-06-2008, 04:37 PM
So Paalo, does your post mean that you won't be there Sunday because it'll be too crowded to make it worth the trip up?

I found this on Driveway Austin's web site:
http://www.drivewayaustin.com/main/?q=node/5
If I see another novice day class, I'll post the info here. The class I'm taking on Saturday I'm guessing it's a once a year offering for SPOKES. SASCA may offer one too.

scca.com
houston has an extremely well organized group.
there's an scca event in pearsall (sp?) at least once a year
the Porsche scca club in the rio grande valley does "track days" using part of the brownsville airport
I could swear there's an scca club in corpus, but that may not be the case anymore. There certainly was in the early 90's.
spokes and sasca are not part of scca, but run events the same way and have been around forever ....... spokes has been around since the 50's.
austin is spokes.org
san antonio is sasca.org
autocross is all about running what you brung so don't sweat the rabbit. some people are very serious about it, and other do it just to have fun.

heard something awhile back, but didn't know they'd actually started.
100 bucks for 4 hours is pretty good, but the membership deposit is a little steep.
hell, autoxing is 20 bucks for 6 minutes of drive time that takes 8 hours of waiting. I spent more than 200 a quarter autoxing in 2005 and 2006 since I was double entering, hitting all the sasca and spokes events plus a few events in houston, dallas, and a&m.
priciest part is tires. :)
I'll have to kick the tires before I join, but as close as it is for me it'll be hard not to.
edit:
damn, just saw the 90 a month on top of the other fees. still, 470 a quarter isn't bad assuming the minimum 2 sessions and 8 hours track time. the no heats thing is pretty cool.
if you want to stay on the cheap side, just keep an eye out for schools and special track days and such that they will surely have. those are one time fee type things.

It will be slow going since I'm a full-time student but I'll get there. The only mods I've done so far has been the tint and the shorty antennea. I did the tint the first week cause it was drivng me bonkers.

It's a privacy thing when you have tint. My Rabbit was the first car I bought without tint. I do like the RS4 rims. They go great with the Rabbit. I may go with GTI springs for now since you can get them pretty cheap and then get the springs/shocks combo later on. Haven't decided yet since you can get new springs for under $200.

I agree with this statement. I bought mine at Hewlett even though Maund is much closer. So far, I have done all my own service as I just don't trust those guys (either dealer). I live near Satin. A little s.e. of waco and will be buying at the end of the month or thereabouts. So far i have visited and talked to salesmen at Mound in Austin and Hewlett in Georgetown. At both places we were treated well and they both had what i was looking for at the time. I did not talk price or drive anything.
Do any of you have experiences with either of these dealerships? Any place that you recommend? When it comes time to buy i do not want to feel led around by the nose and walk away taken advantage of and end up buying a bunch of crap that i don't need. Any place that i should avoid and why?
We look forward to joining some of the get togethers in the future.

Both internet dealers at the two you mentioned were good. Neither had exactly what I wanted, but Elvis at Maund did the work to trade with a non-local dealership for what I wanted. Easiest car buying experience I've ever had. Maybe 3 hours total at the dealership (probably less) between 2 different days (trade-in appraisal/negotiation day and paperwork/pickup day) and maybe 30 minutes on the phone and computer combined with Elvis.

I went to Maund also and I went through micheal. He was really good about the sale. He was straight forward with everything to the color I wanted and the options. My buying time was really short too. I test drove the car on a saturday night and came back and finished the paperwork on monday. Everything was real easy and the only thing that held us up was my insurance but that wasnt their fault. I would recommend Maund too.

I did an internet purchase through Hewlett. We ironed out the deal via email and phone. Robin found me the car I wanted which was in production in Germany at the time. They re-routed the car to me (it had been destined to a dealership in Florida). When it arrived, he had them NOT put a front plate on the car as per my instructions. All I did was show up, inspect the car and do the paperwork. Pretty smooth deal.
Also, I had spoken with Maund and Hewlett about another car prior to my deal and Hewlett came in $500 less than Maund on the exact same car. I think Paalo had the opposite experience be the case.
Anyway, best of luck on your purchase. Post up pictures when you get it (GTI? Rabbit? R32?). Join us for the next GTG.

np. I'm sure plenty of folks like em', just not me. :)
I'm specifically looking for some 17x7.5 +45 to +55 to use in stock class with 245/40 17 hoosier a6's (currently on my denvers).
denvers, A4 sports, maybe even some classix or visions to use as street wheels and keep my denvers in race duty.
Austin or SA preferred for easy pickup.
Turbo
03-18-2008, 12:24 PM
Wouldn't you want the Denvers for street use and the others for autox? Aren't Devenrs/Hufs really heavy?
I was thinking of getting some 17" Classix for autox.
EL PAALO
03-18-2008, 12:39 PM
the 1/2" extra width is worth the weight penalty since I'm using 245/40 17. I'm mainly using them just because I had the slicks sitting in the garage and needed to try them out on something. dismount/mount was free through a friend of a friend so a free test seemed like a good plan. The slicks wore reasonably (looks like it'll take 2 new sets per season or 3 good used) so that's the route I'll take.
I'd love some lightweight 17x7.5's, but there don't seem to be any at a reasonable cost that I like. I'll likely spend at least a grand on race tires this year so I'm trying to stay cheap on race wheels.
I'll likely end up with some ASA JH8's that I think are ugly just because they're the right size and 5 lbs less per corner than denvers (and they're cheap). $107 each is much better than 250ish a corner for superturismo's at the same weight or bbs co's that are only a pound lighter per corner although both are much more attractive.
If I do that, then the denvers will go back to backup street duty. I like having a bone stock setup in the garage just in case.
I'm using some 18x8 +45 ASA JH3 (which also qualify for stock class because of the karthoun? wheels) with 245/35 18 dunlop super sport race full tread r comps as my street/rainy autox setup). This setup weighs the same as stock denvers with re050's. You're welcome to try this setup at the April 13th SASCA event assuming it's dry and I'm on slicks so you can see just how much difference 1 step better tires do. You're also welcome to ride along with me or my codriver to see what a crazy difference slicks make. ;)

How much gas should I try to have in my tank when I show up? I was thinking about 1/2 to 1/3 tank.

Good on the poi.

1/2 tank was just right for me last month with 16 runs on the car so that should be plenty.

I like a little more pressure out back to get rotation rather than way less ..... either gets you the rotation.
There's air on site, so just drive down on whatever your normal street pressures are. If you want to play with pressure between runs, I've got a portable that I bring for just that.

That would be a nice Sunday drive if autox is moved again. I'm probably game for that and would bring my daughter (4).
I could care less about a photoshoot for my basically stock car (besides cheap wheels and big sticky tires). :)

Crap. Went to register for the Harris Hill Road autoX on May 11th and I had to get on the wait list (I'm #15).
I had a crappy weekend. Wrecked the GTI and one of my dogs was so ill the vet and I talked about putting him to sleep. Things are looking better now. Cosmo, my dog, is doing much better and the GTI will be out of the body shop Monday at the latest, tomorrow at the earliest.
Wassup with everyone else in Central Texas?

Good luck.
I would've been 8th or something on the list if I'd registered.
I've got cords showing on 3 out of 4 tires after the SASCA autox so I'm out for May. I should have more tires in a couple weeks, just not positive I'll have em' by the 18th for the next SASCA event.
anybody local have some denvers (wheels only) or something else 17x7.5 +45 to +56 they want to dump for next to nothing? :)

Guy in front of me hit his brakes. So I hit my brakes. No problem. I look in my rear view mirror and see a Mercedes coming at me pretty fast and not stopping. I modulate my brake pressure a bit to not brake so hard, 'cause I don't want to get plowed. Just then, the guy in front of me brakes much harder, then locks 'em up and rear ends the guy in front of him. At this point, because I modulated my brake pressure earlier, I'm now too close to stop in time and tap the guy in front of me. I estimate that all I needed was 6"-12" more inches to stop.
I found out after the fact, that there was some woman in a crossover type SUV who decided it was a good idea to come to a complete stop in the left lane of 1431 for apparently no good reason. Over a half dozen cars came to a halt and were laying on the horn for her to go. According to a witness on the scene, after the pileup happens the woman smiles, waves, and drives off.
For those of you familiar with 1431, this was in a twisty part just west of Cedar Park between Buck Run and Trails End Rd. There is construction going on there to straighten the road because too many people have been killed there. The eye witness was actually one of the construction workers.

I was a little pissed, but kept it in check. I quickly convinced myself that being pissed about it would only make things worse. I'm mostly sad that the GTI is no longer a pristine original.
Yeah, when you rear end someone, they always consider it your fault. I should have just braked like I started to do and taken my chances on being rear ended. I guess this is a small price to pay for not going through life with neck/back pain.
sorry Alex, I wish your car speedy recovery, and am glad you are alright
Thanks for the good wishes. The body shop told me yesterday that it'll be ready on Monday. I'll be glad to get my car back and get rid of this rental PT Cruiser.

Update: I got my GTI back a week ago. I had taken it to Rebreu Body & Frame (near Kramer Lane & Lamar Blvd.) on a couple of recommendations. They did an excellent job AND they turned it around fast. I'm very impressed. Gene knew that I was not their ordinary customer and treated me accordingly.

An update on the Snow's BBQ situation. We tried calling in last week on Wednesday--sold out. We tried calling in yesterday and they said that they were going to try NOT doing pre-orders for a couple of weeks and see how it goes. So, I may make an early morning run on Saturday. If I ever get to try some, I'll let y'all know how good it is. Y'all do the same.

I made it to Snow's BBQ this morning. The brisket is excellent, but their ribs are freakin' AMAZING! I got there at 8:30 this morning and had to wait in line for 1/2 hour to place my order. Crazy! Lot of people were there eating BBQ for breakfast.
The drive out 290 is lame, but 696 was a decent road. I will be making this trip again--when I want BBQ for breakfast on a Saturday.

Hey guys! i Just bought an 08 Rabbit and I'm loving that thing. First thing I'm gonna put are some Enkei rims and BFG KDWs. I was wondering if yall would know anything about putting oem GTI headlights with the HIDs. Would it be more of a problem than its worth or will it be a plug and play kind of thing? BTW do any of you go to or know if that car meet in the Home Depot parking lot off 1431 is still going on.
Turbo
06-29-2008, 08:53 AM
Welcome Kerrnalangus. Congrats on the Rabbit.
As for the HID headlights, I had to have the driver's side assembly replaced on mine due to a fender bender and I believe the one part alone was $400. Don't know if they'd be plug-n-play on a Rabbit.
Don't know about the Home Depot car meet. Report back here if you find something out.
