Like Texas MkV's original post (http://www.golfmk5.com/forums/showthread.php?t=550), I, too, require a front plate to be displayed in the lovely state of New Joisey. I also did not want the dealer to drill the front bumper cover, either. However, Texas MkV's solution would seem to block a lot more lower radiator airflow than I would prefer. So, the next best thing is mounting it in an offest location (think Mitsu Evo8).

I only had to make a small, clean, hole with a razor knife to mount the custom plate mounting bracket. Took me about an hour to fabricate, but if I had to do it again, I would probably have made it a little easier to make.

The result is a VERY secure plate mounting frame that does not move (even at 110mph), satisfies the police, and doesn't block off the radiator airflow.

Here are the teaser pics.

That's pretty clever. Looks beter then those who block the lower grill

Looks really good.

I actually moved my plate up pretty recently. I moved it from the top holes on my liscense plate to the bottom holes so it is sitting between the lower grill and the red smile on the top grill. I hope I get a little more airflow this way. I need to update everything but my car looks like crap and I haven't had time to take new pictures.

I love the way that your's turned out, and it looks like you will get complete airflow from it. Did you connect it the same way that I did or did you do something different. Mine seems to stay on there pretty good right now. I took it through a car wash and it survived. I am guessing it could take just about anything.

I made a much more elaborate bracket for mine, but plan on changing it to something a bit simpler.

You took your car thought the car wash?! AHHHHHHHHHHH! Nooooooooooooooo! No automatic car washes!

When I make my new mount, I'll post up pics of it.

Cool. Mine is to damn complicated to get on and off. Did you have to take off the bottom plastic piece.

Removal of the bottom plastic piece is NOT required! I can take then entire plate assembly off with only a phillips screwdriver in about 3 minutes.

Surely it doesn't block any significant amount of airflow to the radiator in the regular position...

That looks  to me...

It looks crooked. Don't think it looks right on the car that way....but props for trying. Consider this a work in progress....

I like the idea, but better offset the plate a little bit more.

It looks like that plate is blocking some sensor in the first pic (temperature sensor?).

Nope, that's only a phillips head screw (that holds in that fog light surround).

Since this mount, I've changed the fog light surrounds to the "open style", so you don't have to cut a hole anymore.

Ehhh, might work on an Evo, but not for the GTI. Looks out of place. Nice try though.

You have such a nice car with some nice mods done to it. But it would look so much nicer if you'd only put that plate back where it belongs. I can see what you were going for, but it just doesn't work. Sorry, I mean that with the best of intent. Perhaps you will at least consider it. If not then I respect your individuality and to each his own.

that's a tad better! still prefer the centre-mount one.

too bad the usa can't use euro-style plates. but instead of the country flag on it, you'd have the state flag!

some might hate that idea.

Truth be told, If it had extra PBA cards to give to my wife, I'd just take the front plate off entirely.

Since it's me with the law enforcement relationships, the car has to roll ligit for the most part.

Maybe I'll redo the mount, near the stock location, but make it a quick mount style...

FYI - as of September 1st, front license plates are no longer required. My dealer informed me when I got my plates today...

I should clarify that this new law is for the state of Texas.... sorry

You also need to call Texas DOT to see if in fact it is true.

I've looked all over the web trying to find a publication showing in fact that the law has been changed in the state of Texas.

I know that they tried to pass it last year, but it failed to pass.

well I'm jelous you guys didn't even had the license plate drilled in, while here in california first thing they do is drill for the license plate both the front and back, so they put their ****en advertising on. so the question is how o take it out, i know its some kind of clip but i tried to pull it off and i couldn't any one has any ideas or seen what im talking about.
