07 BM VW GTI 4dr DSG, Pkg 2
I've been driving it for 2 weeks now and I absolutely *love* the car. I was originally scared away from the GTI because of VW's spotty reliability history (every single one of my friends brought this up when I mentioned I was considering a VW), and I had been seriously considering a Mazda 3 (which I also liked a lot) as an alternative. And curiously, when I test drove the GTI, I liked it a lot but couldn't decide if I loved it or not. I did think the ride was a little stiffer than I was used to, but thought that maybe due to the Huffs. Well, at the last minute the dealer here found a GTI with the options I was looking for and I decided to take a chance.
After 2 weeks, I am loving the car more each day, and as much fun as I have driving it, thoughts of reliability don't even cross my mind now. If I have issues in the future, so be it...I'll deal with them then. The ride no feels stiff (maybe the stock wheels took some of the edge off). I know for the same or less money, I could have gotten a faster car (eg Mazdaspeed3), or better handling car (eg Mini Cooper S), and the interior is probably not as nice as higher end cars not that many $K more expensive. But for lack of descriptors, when I drive this car, its just seems to have the right balance of all of the above and everything just seems so smooth. And special mention has to go to the DSG transmission and the seats, both of which are awesome.
To be sure, I do have have minor nitpicks:
The Sirius radio doesn't work. Not a big deal since I wasn't planning on continuing subscription after the 3 month free trial. The dealer is going to take care of it but I'm in no rush.
Road noise a little higher than I'm used to at high speeds, but I am slowly getting used to it.
Paint came with some swirls, only noticeable in direct sunlight but made more obvious since the car is black. I'm still learning about car detailing (eg Zaino, buffing, etc), so I'm planning on taking care of it in the near future. I thought about asking the dealer to take care of them, but then I've read of horror stories of similar situations where the dealer just made it worse, so I'm not sure I want them touching the car again.
Overall though this car is perfect for me. I feel like reprimanding myself for ever considering a Mazda . I'm sure I would have liked it, but I now understand the difference between liking your car and loving it.
