It's steel grey over here, GREY by the way. Bit like the colour of the sky over here most days

Hi HGVT, yes it is metallic. We paid about £330 GBP extra for it in the UK.

Those pics from Golf5GTI.net are what sold me on United Gray and the Karthoum rims. I'm using one of them as my avatar and merged 4 to use as a wallpaper. I wondered if I'd get bored of looking at the wallpaper but after 2-3 months I still love it.

To my opinion the rear looks so much better without the VW Emblem in it. And I also think that of the GTI grill. It looks so much cooler and meaner without the VW and the GTI logo's

I live in Belgium, that lies next to Germany, so we get pretty much all the models of VW at the dealers. So does America gets a Jetta GLI which front looks like the Golf GTI. Here we can also buy a Jetta with the 2.0 TFSI engine but with the standard bodykit and not with the superb looking GTI front

^^if im not mistaken they look alot like "work" rims, and if they are i think there might be fitment issues because they are a japenese company although they do have a very extensive custom order process.

So how does the United Gray stand up to swirl marks and whatnot (waterspots, too)? Easy to keep clean like Candy White? Just wondering, since I'm probably going to have to choose between United Gray and Candy White...

Arguably easier to keep clean then Candy White, because you get raid dust rust spots on the white paint, I had that problem with my candy white TDI, you can get them out with a clay baring, but its annyoing.

This ain't my GTI. I found the pics on VWFixx. It's a project there and I don't think they used spacers to mount those 19" OZ Superturismo wheels because those OZ Superturismo wheels are only 8" wide and have an ET of 48

I think United Grey is the most appealing. It isn't as flashy a the red and not as stiff as the black.

Did you take any pics with the wheels but stock suspension, I thought long and hard about aftermarket 17's but ended up just getting the stock 18's for looks because I'm not going to lower my car (pa roads are really crap)

arn't those Motegi Racing LC5's in Teflon Black? how did you get them to fit? arn't they 5x100 bolt pattern? and the stock mk v is 5x112..? correct me please :) also where did you buy em from?
feuerdog
04-02-2006, 11:34 AM
They are Flik FTD's, from Edgeracing.com for $99 ea.
http://www.golfmkv.com/forums/showpost.php?p=919&postcount=1
They don't come in black, they come in a matt titanium(crappy finish/weird shade of gray) I bought them with the intention of painting them black.
They are light at 18lbs ea.
They are simple to clean.
They don't draw alot of attention(especially in black).
They are inexpensive to replace if needed.
I have an anti-bling kinda style. I like chrome on other peoples cars, but not my own. I've had black wheels on all of my cars since 1987.

ne rubbing?
ride?
Alot firmer than stock, especially with these dampers. Not harsh, but not stock smooth either. ALOT more response/feedback/control.
Not even close to rubbing anywhere.
These are the stock Bridegstones that came with the car,....I wanted to confirm the clearances before I upsize/upgrade my tires. Because of the high torque, speedo inaccuarccies, remaining wheel gap, etc. I think I might be able to get a 245/45/17's in there(probably Bridgestone SO-3 Pole Positions). If the 245 is too close then a 235/45 will definately fit.
Once again, i'm looking for performance for the dollar, not style.

There aren't any debadged grills available. If you want a debadged grill you'll have to do it yourself exactly what the guy of that UG GTI did. He cleaned it himself using a second grill as donor.

Out of curiousity: why trade the S2000 for GTI? Until I drove a GTI I was intent on purchasing an S2000...there is still a slight chance I would. Why'd you make the switch?

I really want Red, but UG is so tempting. Even completely stock it looks good where as the Red in my opinion is a little bit lacking. Also, its a bit more subtle so it won't be such a cop magnet. :)

UG is great, my first choice was white, then red. Dealer was supposedly looking for those colors but on the day I was supposed to pick up the car they didn't even do the footwork. At first I was thinking no way, but looking back UG would've been my first choice instead of last. I'm glad I ended up with this color.

The rear end and side skirts cost me £400 to have painted, the side skirts are from the R32, £75.00 if I remember right. they come already primered and are made from different plastic to the original gti's.
Yep I should of had the front lip painted at the same time, but a couple of painters have advised against it saying its made from the wrong plastic and will chip in no time, as the front end get a fair hammering from stones and alike.

j/w, what are those lil circles for on the bumper?
I think they are called parking assistance. When you backup and get to close to something, a proximity sensor goes off and gives you a "bing" in the cabin letting you know that you are too close. Or...it will show up on the NAV/DVD screen. BMW has this technology and others do too like DaimlerChrysler. They used it on their minivan Dodge Caravan so soccer mom's dont crush lil' kids backing up.

You don't need a new hood. It just requires a ride to a decent bodyshop who fills up the hole very easy and after that paint your original hood back in the colour of the car.

IMHO, it looks way too generic without the VW badges.

A little late on the reponse but... I have bilstein PSS9s... I have ~1.5 finger gap front/rear which is probably around 1.7" drop or so.. didn't measure.
Changing the springs or whatever to drop your car only will affect warranty for things that are directly affected... Really suspension should have no impact on warranty except if you do springs and use stock shocks, I doubt they would warranty the shocks.

Right... that is definitely the case... the MKV "Golf" didn't show up here until MY2006 -- actually released in late-05 for GTI, mid-06 for Rabbit.
It was MY2005.5 for Jetta (actually released in late Spring 05, I believe) which was just a bit earlier than Europe IIRC... introduced at the NY Auto Show.
But back to the MKVI... I was just wondering if you were talking about the MY2009 coming out in 08?
Or are they updating to the MKVI for MY2008 or MY2008.5?
I was thinking it's too late to do that... but I don't know when your new models come out for the next year... in the US it's usually mid-summer through early fall that the next year's models come out.

i want to post some pictures of my ride can someone walk me through the process first time doing this.
The pics first need to be on your computer. Sign up for a free account at photobucket.com (which I use) or imagestation.com and upload your photos. The site will then give you image tags to post which, in text form, look something like this:
http://www.photobucket.com/yourusername/thenameofyourpic.jpg
The first 'img' in brackets doesn't have the "." in it, I have to put that there so it doesn't think I'm posting a picture.
jimithing412

Go to Photobucket.com. Set up an acount and upload your photo's. After you upload them it will provide you with various tags to use in posting pictures. The tag to post on here is the second one. Good luck.

Oh, I used to have my front plate there, until I got massive heatsoak in the summer. Probably won't do much harm in the winter months, but in the summer, it definitely blocks the airflow to the factory front mount.

How is the comfort/control over stock?
I always said that I didn't need the adjustability of coilovers and that my cupkit would be low enough, but of course, the grass is always greener on the other side.
Those may be on my mod list in the next few years after everything else.

01-21-2008, 02:13 AM
It actually rides pretty well. I had the h&r super sport spring kit with stock shocks and the B&Gs were a definite upgrade as far as ride quality.
g60_corrado_91
01-21-2008, 02:15 AM
Interesting. I'll bet a lot of it was because of the stock shocks though. Either way, that's impressive considering how low you are.
passatguy86
01-21-2008, 02:28 AM
Honestly I can't remember how the stock gti rode but I took a fellow dubber on a quick ride so that he could make up his mind on what lowering kit he wanted to buy and he said it was not much rougher than stock. Sooo that being said this is a nice setup.
g60_corrado_91
01-21-2008, 08:21 PM
Yeah, my cupkit isn't too much worse than stock either, but it's obviously not as low.
A lot of it depends on what tires and what size rims you're on. I have 18's with General UHP tires, for summer use. Each tire as well as rim size can make the ride harsher or softer.
