Thanks to TTr250 for the following excellent writeup!
_______________________________________________

well i'm going to try and help out the text with a little diy..
i couldnt stand the yellow hue of the factor bulbs in the fogs lights so i wanted a good replacement. I decided to go with silverstar light bulbs. the fog like bulbs are 9006's. i had the silver stars in my jetta mk4's headlights and i thought they were great, especially for the price. i got both of them for 45 bucks.

this is the light output of the stock bulbs
http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e104/snowhare/fogs/diyfogs001.jpg

so here we go.
first locate the open honeycomb where there is screw that holds the grill in.
http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e104/snowhare/fogs/diyfogs004.jpg

unscrew and pull
http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e104/snowhare/fogs/diyfogs005.jpg

i found it is easiest to pull this way. and back towards myself
http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e104/snowhare/fogs/diyfogs006.jpg

now locate the three screws that hold the housing in place and unscrew
http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e104/snowhare/fogs/diyfogs009.jpg
http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e104/snowhare/fogs/diyfogs010.jpg
http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e104/snowhare/fogs/diyfogs008.jpg
now that the housing is free place ur screw driving lightly into harness to unsnap
http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e104/snowhare/fogs/diyfogs012.jpg
twist blub out and here is what u will have
http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e104/snowhare/fogs/diyfogs015.jpg
get new blub and put in place
http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e104/snowhare/fogs/diyfogs016.jpg
reconnect the harness by snapping it back into place
http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e104/snowhare/fogs/diyfogs017.jpg
i choose to place all 3 screws in lightly, hold in place that i wanted the housing and tighten. **make sure u dont tighten to much, it can cause damage**
http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e104/snowhare/fogs/diyfogs018.jpg
to replace grill start it like this
http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e104/snowhare/fogs/diyfogs021.jpg

the new light output..sorry i dont have any at night yet.

Also, to me, the easiest way was instead of taking out the housing itself, is just reaching around behind it and unscrewing it. Also, you don't need a screwdriver to release the bulb, just your fingers.

OOOO. Also, you can change these to HID bulbs too. Best to get 3000K bulbs.

i've replaced my fog lights with red ones, tho they look kinda pinkish.
but people still think they're cool.
there is an easier way to do it, provided your kinda skinny, like me.
just remove the black vent cover and wiggle your hand behind the fog light housing and its only a matter of twisting the fog light unit out and pulling the light and. this makes it alot easier to replace the bulb. no need to unscrew the whole assembly.

Wow, this thread is old. Raphael, your's are probably torx because you have a 2007. Cause you saw mine. And mine have the philips screw heads and it's an 06. That is a decent writeup too.

Which ones are those?

Since you asked for pictures, here's mine with the Hoen Xenonmatch (CW GTI). Raphael's BMP has the Hoen Endurance foglights. Sorry OP for taking over your thread.

Thanks. Yeah, they seem even bluer than the HID's themselves at times, but the camera does definitely enhance the blue even more so (just look at the HID's, they're warmed up too). But in real life they are still really xenon looking compared to the stock ones.

zex021, they're the Hoen Xenonmatch foglights, 9006 I believe. Just look at my signature for reference.

I got them for $22 plus shipping and handling, but that was during a group buy. I'm not sure what they are normally. I see you're local as well.

Most likely a t20 Torx. You can usually pick up a bit for a bit driver at a hardware store for under a buck.

If you're running the stock wattage, you shouldn't have a problem. I think the stock wattage is ~55W or so. My friend had Nokya yellow bulbs that were ~90W which was way too much, but even with running those for a few weeks he had no issues. He has Hoen Endurances now that are 55W.

Nice write up .

You should try to put the glass projector fog lights .
They give a much clearer light, which beat at a greater distance and they have a better look!

Best regards,

Is there a variety of 9006 base connectors or are the all the same? I found the 9006 Hoen 55w xenonmatch and hope they will fit.

I don't think you can turn the fogs on without the main lights. But I think you can have them on with just the position lights on.

vag-com.

As atl says, VAG-COM is the only way.
There are two ways you can accomplish fogs without headlights.

The easiest ($0) is to leave Daytime Running Lights active and change to Fogs as DRL lights.

Vehicle Electrical System Controller J519 — Byte 17
bit 4 on changes DRL to fog lights
http://dataton.net/vw/VAGscreenshot/FogsAsDRL-09centElec-07-byte17.png

http://dataton.net/vw/GTI-front_lights/GTI_DRL_fog.jpg

Otherwise, you need to purchase a Euro switch and either turn DRL off
or leave DRL active and set a non-US instrument setting.
Either will allow the city light switch position to activate fogs with the city lights, but no headlights.

Vehicle Electrical System Controller J519 — byte 0
To disable DRL turn off bit 4

http://dataton.net/vw/electrical/euro_switch_auto-city_frntFog.jpg + DRL Off -or- non-US instrument setting =
http://dataton.net/vw/GTI-front_lights/GTI_city_lights_fog_lights.jpg

Or you can do both

So to clarify - you did not have any problems with 9006 Endurance bulb pair 55w, just install? I am running totally stock and don't want to jump extra hoops just to get it to work on stock.

Yeah you should be fine. I've actually got my friend's old Nokya's now because one of my Xenonmatch bulbs burnt out. The box says 90W, but the bulb says 55w so they're actually fine to run.

Endurances will be fine as well.

Wife just burned out both fogs driving down a flooded street last night. Guess I'll order these for both cars. Nothing like an upgrade opportunity.
