View Full Version : Wanted: A partner/s for some sticky vinyl action

I was thinking of applying vinyl on the bonnet as below, most likely these are painted on but it can be done using cast vinyl film...and the good thing is it's not permanent...
I need an access to an undercover, preferably an underground car parking (no wind/dust particles etc) and a keen fellow GOLFMKVer to help out...of course we'll get both our cars done...A parking lot like AussieGTI's in the sticker thread would be ideal...
As for the material...you are probably looking at less than $50...
I already have all the required tools of trade...
I'm looking at getting it done this weekend or the next...
So who's up for some hot sticky vinyl action?

A little more info on vinyl...
The vinyl used will be Avery 900 series Super cast...the adhesive will not damage your paint...this is a professional-grade graphic film the sign writers use for vehicle signage...
The film is resistant to prolonged UV exposure, temperature range of -50C - 110C...outdoor life of 9-10 years in harsh Australian conditions for solid colours or 5 years for the metallic...
Heck...it could also save you some stone chips
Here's the complete spec sheet...

Hey SideFX,
My underground car park is crap as it's heavily ventilated. So dust does get in from the sides! But how dust-free do you need it to be?
BTW, how would you remove such a large piece of vinyl say after 5 years under the harsh sun, without any sticky residue.
Is this the same stuff you used for our freebie stickers?

As long as there is no wind to blow the dust particles to the adhesive...it should be fine...I have no garage and I live on a hill facing the mountains...lots of wind...:frown:
BTW, how would you remove such a large piece of vinyl say after 5 years under the harsh sun, without any sticky residue.I won't BS you here, there WILL be sticky residues...Use a heat gun to soften the adhesive, no heat gun? then use a hair dryer...most of the adhesive will come off with the film...the residue can be removed using eucalyptus oil...baby oil also does an excellent job:thumbsup:
The sticky residue will be the gummy type...not the slimey greasy smudgy type...if you know what I mean...
Is this the same stuff you used for our freebie stickers? The freebie stickers were created using Avery 700 series vinyl...Ok for 4-5 years...but will shrink/crack in harsh environment...
The 900 series is the heavy duty stuff...it's the same stuff you see on promo vehicles and the big trucks with adverts on the side...

It will look kool :w00t:
There is also a 3M product that is UV rated. Minigolf may confirm, but the stripes on minis that you see are usually 3M material and no issues.
The guy here fits no problems and it does not damage paint. On my Mini the dealer used the original stripes and these were precut, such they did not fit perfectly which annoyed me, so Patrick came round and removed and fit the 3M. Perfectoooo :headbang:

If you decide to remove the film after a couple or more years, would there be different tones/finish in the paintwork given that the uncovered paintwork will chip, micro-stretch and/or deteroriate with time? The films in promotional cars do not stay on them longer to get the different paintwork effect? Just wondering.

Very good point...
I personally doubt you will really notice the difference...that is unless you treat your car like a courier van driver...
yes..we all seen those ex-courier vans bought cheap at an auction...and yes it does have the different shade where the sticker was once present...
If you leave your car in direct sunlight all day and maybe wash your car every 6 months let alone a polish? Then yes, there will be a visible mark...
If you take care of your car (wash/wax when necessary), not exposed to direct sunlight all day everyday...I doubt there will very much if any difference...
I guess the same goes for the Minis with those stripes?

I really like the black of the grill continued up the bonnet.
I would definitely consider it if my GTI was white or grey.
P.S.
SideFX, I just posted so you could see my avatar again!

Ok, final call. I'm going to my supplier this arvo to get the film and will apply it tomorrow.
I will be getting it done at my work in St Leonards.
Get back to me by 3pm if interested.
As for the material, I have checked and its $50.50

Hhmmm now I'm getting second thoughts. I'm thinking it might look a little too much on a stock standard car?!?!
If it turns out gay then I guess I can just remove it but that means I just wasted $50 which could have gone towards the reflash.
Decisions decisions....:iono:

Where in St leonards are you going to install the film?

Heya Peoples,
First post to the forum...
I'm in and around Wollstonecraft. I'd be game to see what it looks like on a Silver GTI.
Sweet!

If you see a TR 3dr with a small bingle in the rear corner on the passenger side, wave, that's me!! >(

I guess you're saying you've been Bingled. I'll be the one peering out out of my Silver 4dr looking for your TR... that works doesn't it?
Anyway, thanks again.

Yeah, my fault so I can't blame anyone else. It was my friend's RS Replica I reversed into. (Note to self, Porsche fronts are too low for the rear park sensors to read!!)
So, definitely no intake for me, but I might think about a Caractere rear bumper :D
cypressvalley
02-18-2007, 06:09 AM
That bumper has to be one of the sweetest looking going around at the moment.
It sets the rear off perfectly - combination of style and aggression imo.
The only site I've managed to track Caractere is CarShine.com.au... is there anywhere in Sydney ppl know of?

Aw thanks!
Spanks for passing on the website... I'll have a squizz now and figure out which of my organs to sell in order to pay for the potential damage I'm about to dish out on my credit card.
Gotta say, it's pretty cool when you're cruising around and you see that distinctive GTI front-end coming in your direction. I always give a little wave  and hope I get one back. A little lame, I know, but occasionally I get one back!

Dragan at inmotive is great!! His r32 is a monster!! If I can't find a replacement, I'll probably give him a call and see what it would cost.
Of course, if you don't want yours cypressvalley, I'll have it :bellyroll:
I'll wave if I see you (unless I'm paying attention to something else, then you just get a belated online wave
