I'm almost positive i'm going to get a GTI before the end of june. I have a question though, I have a Jetski, and i'm wondering if i'd be able to put a hitch on the MKV, or is it far too low the ground? I don't doubt it has the power or weight to pull it out of the water, but.. yeah, the hitch.
Thanks.
There is a pretty extensive section in the manual about towing with a ball hitch, so I imagine it would be okay, but I can't really say because I've never towed a thing in my life. You may try to take a look at a manual at a dealer.
Sorry I wasn't as helpful as the responder above.

I really wouldn't put a hitch on this car before you contact your service guy at VW.

In Germany the price for part 1K0 092 155 is 380 € and for part 1K0 055 204 the price is 272 €.

your GTI will have enought weight and power to rip that jet ski trailer out of the water like youve never seen befor. Get real this thing has 200+ pounds of tourqe. I think the manual says max trailer towing weight is only 1000 pounds thou. Even if your over that i think you should be fine. Just dont dawg the car when yer trailering.

Thanks guys, i'm going to the dealer today most likely to take my first "in real life" look at them. It's good to know they have the option in Germany, now i'm not doubting the MKV at all.
And yeah, I don't doubt it's ability at all to pull the ski, just didn't know if they had a hitch option, or if it was even possible to get a hitch on it. I'm going to go with first party.
Thanks again.
thats rediculous dont use your gti to yank around a jetski... thats the most aweful thing i have ever heard of!
Shhh, the grown-ups are talking.

what? can i not put my two cent in around here i thought this was a forum... all i am saying is MY opinion about what I would do with MY car... isnt that what 2 cent is all about... i donno but whatever thanks for erasing my stuff seeing that he came back with a smart response which by the way if a so called "grown-up" would say what he said then he would just be contradicting himself by making a rediculous remark. so what if i wanted to fire back... sorry for posting my opinion which was that a GTI should not be used as a hauler... just incase yall couldnt see that through the way i typed it.
again THANK YOU

t a GTI should not be used as a hauler...
Exactly. You don't hear Bob Seger playing in the background of VW commercials for a reason. The only thing the GTI is meant to haul is ass, and it does passes that test with flying colors. Though in the past a hatchback could be considered a small minivan, that's not the case for a GTI. You don't see many yuppies towing their trailer home with their porsche 911.

Are you trying to be the first one banned off these forums or is it just coming naturally? Seriously, dude. Didn't you mother ever tell you if you haven't got something nice to say, keep it to yourself?
I'm not sure if this was to me or kurrupt? So i'll explain myself, just incase i'm giving the wrong impression.
Basically, i'm not found of "opinions" that have nothing to do with the subject at hand. My question wasn't "HUR HUR, will I look cool towing a Jetski!? Hur hur". If it was, then by all means, I would't have mind Kurupt's "opinion" at all. Instead, I get a bash of sorts for what I believe is a very valid question. This is a forum about the MKV, which seems to be the all around car. Just because it's turbo'd, I don't think that we should have the mentality that it can only drive in straight lines. It comes down to, if you want to act like a child, you'll be treated as one.
To the comment about the Porsche. This is a Golf, not a Porsche. Again, that wasn't my question.
So, to the people that actually *helped* me get an answer, thanks. You're valuable assests to a good forum. Expect more lurking from me. =)

Jetskis are cool.
Befits the character of a GTI to pull one about. Something fast pulling something fast.
Makes sense to me.
That's all.

Well. there some of us who want the tow hitch for track/autocrossing purposes. Basic tools and 4 race day tires/rims. Comes out to a 500-1000lb trailer and it makes life easy. Tires and tools to race day without having to get the car excessivly dirty on the inside.

I've decided I "need" a track day car... was looking to buy a cheap Mk1 GTI and do it up nicely. But then I'd need a trailer... and then I'd need a hitch... and that means doing things to my baby!
Alternatively, I could try to steal the keys to my dad's car when I'm home and getting a hitch fitted to that... and then sneaking off to Germany with it... heh, heh, heh...

I need something to tow my track day car with. It is a 2000 Nissan Sentra SE. Soon it will be turbo then a cage, harnesses, and seats. Then gut it. It was 2674 dry when it was new I don't think I can tow that and a trailer w/ my GTI or my wife's Beetle.:frown:

There's no way our cars can support towing another car on a trailer. That's stepping into trailer brake territory. There's no way our chassis can support that kind of weight.

ummm ok cuse you people who say it cant just all happen to be engineers...Its cool to state opinions but if you dont know wth your talking about then don't. The gti will be fine pulling a small trailer talk to ur local vw dealership.

Not too sure about towing with this car. Can it be done?Yes Will the car be ok afterwords down the road?who knows. My wifes 01 Honda Oddysey van can't pull anything over 1,000 because of the tranny. Honda didn't find out till after the vans were out there for some time and they kept putting in new trannys under warranty. Now her van has a 100,000 mile bumper to bumper because of that straight from Honda.

It'll handle a small trailer. We all know that.
TO get supertechnical this car, and just about every Golf/Jetta since MK3 is rated for a class 1 trailer. Which is 1500lbs max.
There's no way in hell a GTI can tow another vehicle unless it happens to be an SCCA formula car or something like that that weights 800-1200lbs.

FYI,
I just got a hitch installed for my GTI. Draw Tite and Hidden Hitch make one, about $160 installed. Got mine by Camp Out in Homestead, FL. Needed one for my bicycles.

my 6-speed can handle 2k lbs for a braked trailer and around 1650 for an unbraked one. 1000/1000 only for the dsg version.

My 07 GTI is the "Big Car" in our family, so it has to be able to tow. I installed the hidden hitch w/ only a minor amount of profanity. It bolts up solid, but I do have a scraping noise over big bumps when the exhaust hanger bracket rubs up against it. I'm still working on the details of killing that squeak.
Only tackle the install if you have a complete tool set, including a 95 N-m capable torque wrench. Also, Hidden Hitch has a quirk, they mixed SAE and Metric fastners! The provide bolt is SAE, and the recycled frame bolt is of course metric.
For you skeptics, I prefer to use a hitch mounted bicycle rack instead of the roof mounted rack. Aside from being easier to load, reducing the risk of scraping my car while loading/unloading, and killing the whistle I got while carrying a bicycle on top of my old car, the hidden hitch and hitch mounted bicycle carrier combo is cheaper than the VW roof top bars and bicycle mount.
I also need to be able to tow my track prepped, non-street legal motorcycle to the track. Autocross is fun, but if you really want to find out if you are a man or a boy try putting a knee down at the ton.
The Germany spec tow hitch is trick, but ultimately wouldn't work for me. It won't take a bicycle carrier.
As an aside, the manual for my 07 says that the information on towing limits was not available at the time of printing !? The VW website used to say that the GTI has a towing limit of 200 pounds tongue weight and 2000 pounds total weight. Pretty typical for a car this class. If they changed their spec or got nervous about towing behind the GTI I don't know. I'm doing it anyway.

I didn't read the post but because it revived a wicked old/kinda bad thread, you win the "Worst first post EVAR" award. After careful review, it isn't that bad.

This would also be perfect for a tire trailer. For towing track tyres to the track.

I decided to add the information to a relevant thread instead of starting a 7th trailer hitch thread. So is that a "worst first post" or a "worst welcome to the board?"
